Way cool. I think I had a modern armor with a 5 in my last game.

in all the games of civ4 i've played the best unit i have ever hard was a modern armor with 36 experience, the promotions he had:
Same, never went past 6 promotions (cossack with 2 stars, +25 vs gunpowder, heal, zone heal and heal in movement).

I find it a nice tactic to have a sneaker healer in your stack : an unit that only attacks at the end, when fight is always a win, and then takes easy promotion, and let it be the "doc" of your army.

I've never even seen Combat V :(

All my units suck. The minute they become almost uber, some longbowman or other comes and kills them.

I had a Rifleman with 7 promotions  in my last game. One good thing about the Romans is that their Praetorian comes early and can last a whole game - one of my first Praetorians was used as a City Smasher and I was going for a Domination on Emperor (which I won :D ), so he got plenty of opportunities to gain XP. I promoted him to Rifleman near the end, with 50+ experience.

He had Lvl 3 City Raider and Lvl 4 Combat at the end... needless to say, no city defender could stand against him :king:

Love the praetorians. But I never upgrade them. Too expensive. I think it's more cost effective to build riflemen to replace them when the time comes. Around that time you're not building too much, anyway. That said, if I do have an exceptionally advanced unit I'll typically only upgrade them.

i've played in a MP game as the russians where everyone turned on my war-mongering ways and globally united to destroy me ala civ 2. Through some devious tactics and early cossacks tech I was able to hold them off from longbowmen in the very beginning up until the point they got tanks. Those cossacks though...man. Started as horse archers, I had a level 9 and a level 8 one, as well as a bunch of level 5-6's. I think they were pushing 70 exp. One was combat 5, commando, and 25% gunpowder. Another was combat 5 and commando. It was fun using them to pop level 1 tanks and then running back inside my cities to heal. They almost re-took my capitol too in a final suicide rush vs sam-infantry but he had built up too much culture at that point. I dont think he was expecting me to have commando with them :goodjob:

A guy on another thread rolled out his guy, Axeman Bob with 51XP.

If you're looking to build a guy with a massive amount of XP, whether for West Point or simple enjoyment, one way is to protect him against a fair fight and only use him against inferior injured enemy units.

Regardless of actual experience totals, there can be no argument: the single most uber unit you can have in the game is a blitz-enabled gunship. If there is anything more fun than taking out massive stacks of armor with a couple of quick bomber strikes and a massive gunship-blitz, I don't know what it is.

UberMech: my little guy had been promoted from an Axeman in 2000BC:

Mech Infantry
City Raider 3
Combat 4 (aggressive civ)
+25% Gunpowder
March

That's 72 strength attacking a gunpowder unit in a city, who gets a 25% strength reduction. And he heals every turn... :D

Mech infantry with city raider promotions actually make great assault units, since they don't have to stop and heal, recieve defensive bonuses, and don't have vulnerability to gunships. I usually end up with 4-5 city raider mechs in the modern era...

... And, they shoot back at airplanes.

Oh, man. I just had this axeman who had five upgrades. Towards the end of my war with the Spanish I only used him in certain victory situations to get him more experience. Had him up to, like, 23 or something - whatever five upgrades is. Then I sent him to a barbarian city on grassland to attack an archer. Almost certain victory. Bam - killed. No more 5-star axeman. Boo-hoo!

Uh... I have a lvl 5 swordsman. :mischief: But seriously he was supposed to be a well rounded unit...

Strength +10%
City Raider +10%
vs. Melee +25%
vs. Archery +25%

:D I thought he was really cool. But I didn't get to name him before he died. :crazyeye:

A US Navy SEAL: Starts with March
Medic I (thanks to Red Cross)
Amphibious
Combat I (washington as agressive civ)
And built in city with barracks (4xp), pentagon (2xp), West point (4xp), vassalage and theocracy (4xp).

So my very newly build Navy SEAL has: Combat IV, March, Medic I and Amphibious!!!

In my latest game, dear Genghis keeps declaring war on me. I keep taking his cities, and then his gold when he sues for peace, but the little guy is so persistent. He keeps sending over these hordes of Catapults (because I've deprived him off all resources besides stone and rice), so my Horse Archers have been having a field day. One of them has Combats I, II, and III, as well as Medics I and II, and 25% against Archers (since they're occasionally accompanied by Longbowman. Best Horse Archer I've ever had

I have a new favorite unit... Cossacks! These guys are AMAZING! When they reach Combat III, March and Blitz...18 strength and +50% vs mounted...kill two units per turn, heal every turn...you rack up the XP at a rediculous rate! I eventually got this guy, and 6 others around level 7!

...and upgraded:

:xmastree: LEVEL 10 BABY! :woohoo: :band:

Time to take on some tanks!

Wow Thalassicus that is simply amazing:eek:. The most "uber" unit I ever had was a level 7 Modern Armor that I saved for easy battles so it could level up even more. It had combat I, II, and III and the thing that makes it good against armor and against gunpowder units. It also had two city attack promotions. It would of become level eight but it lost in an important battle to save a city:sad:.

Wow...Cossacks upgrade to Gunships?!?

Anyway, last game out I had a battleship defending an equatorial island from which I planned to build the space elevator. I don't know if the AI knew it--ok, I know they don't, but it seemed like it--but they kept coming after the island. So this battleship got to sink ship after ship. I don't remember how many promotions it got. I know it got to 5 stars, but also had a couple of first-strike upgrades. Thing was badass. It would go up against fresh enemy battleships with something like +50% odds to win.

I asked my daughter what we should name it, and she decided on "Wonderful Mayflower." What can I say? She's six and we live in the desert. Mayflower's about the only ship she's ever heard of.
