1848 cont'd
The American war plan developed by General Winfield Scott called for troops in the north under the Army of the Rockies commanded by John Sloat to capture Nimes, Macao, and Asturias. They would then press on to Jaen.
The eastern forces comprising the Army of the Colorado under General Stephen Kearny would launch an initial three-pronged attack on Valladolid and Murcia from the north, and Pamplona from the west. Simultaneously the Army of the Pacific Northwest would attack east through the Colorado Mountains and the tundra to the north.
With those territories captured, the second phase of the operation would take place and Salamanca and then Barcelona would be seized. Barcelona was the gateway to Madrid and central to America’s plan.
From there, the war would enter its final phase. Troops under General Zachary Taylor commanding the Army of the Pacific would push south and southwest to the coast. Two main axes of attack would roll up Madrid and Toledo on the left wing, while Santander, Zaragoza and Valencia were taken by the right. General Kearny would drive west, to capture Seville, Palma and Zohak. It was planned that the entire campaign take no more than 7 years to complete, with the end result that Spain would be completely defeated.

There were those however who claimed Fillmore's greatest contribution was giving General Scott a free hand in conducting the campaign and just staying out of the general's way. He later in the year arranged peace with the Arabs, and offered 60 gold in return.
The third treaty was with Britain, and America provided 80 gold in return.
