You're in :)

Oh, and of course, with Preferred Civ's, first in, best dressed there.

Myself? I'm going Peter of Russia.

I'm in Australia, so I believe from my SW Galaxies days midnight is 5pm.. which is fine by me, i'll be playing my turn after 6pm, (so 1am PST) and if not, I can always jump on before work :)

So yeah, midnight sounds good for the turn cutoff.

PBEM or otherwise?

Good luck getting 18 people to get a turn done in one day by PBEM. This would be much more realistic with PitBoss.

Hmm? Well I work 9 hours a day, I'm engaged, I play other games, watch movies etc etc etc.. but for me a turn would only take, what 10 mins max out of my day?

I thought 1 turn a day is quite acceptable.. is there something I'm missing? And what is PitBoss?

Sign me up, I shall play as Isabella of Spain.

The problem isn't in actually taking your turn, it is sending the turn to the next person in the game in order and having very little downtime in between the time you send it and the time the next person gets their email. If you can schedule your game, it might minimize the downtime, but still, if one person doesn't check their email once a day (or checks before the game gets to them) everyone else has to wait 24 hours to play.

Check out this thread. It has eleven players and has taken nine days to complete only the first turn: Close Quarters

PitBoss is a feature Take 2 or Firaxis (or Gamespy, I don't truly remember) is planning on releasing for PBEM style games. The name comes from PTBS, which stands for Persistent Turn Based Server. In theory, which is all anyone appears to have at this point, the game is hosted and saved on the PTBS. Each player can log on and play their turn, and once all players have completed their turns, the AI moves and the next turn begins. The advantages:

1) No turn order. Each player can go as soon as the turn begins.
2) No emails to send, or files to attach. This seems to be harder than one would think.

The Server could even email all players when the next turn is ready. I think the only drawbacks are the technical logistics involved. All of this said, sign me up anyway. I'll be happy to lend my very limited expertise in setting up PBEMs.

Bismarck, bitte.

A game this large really would flow much better with Pitboss. Grrr, when will it be released?

Hmm.. I wasn't aware of PBEM being a pass-the-parcel kind of deal. I have a look around for PitBoss, it could be another month away. Now.. a few questions..

With PBEM, if a PBEM game had 2 players and they continously played their turn, emailed back and so on, would the game progress in that manner? Or is there a setting in the game to stipulate the timeframe of the game? IE, if these 2 players were playing on a 1-turn-per-day rate, and they played both their turns in the first hour of the turn, would they have to wait till the next day?

No, if you were playing with one other person and you were both online, you could send it back and forth repeatedly. But if you were both online and able to play, why would you not just play a Direct IP game? You can take turns or select simultaneous movement.

I'll play. I doubt we can get all 18 players in every day, but worth a shot.

I'll play any race.
I'm in US EST (GMT -5) and can play my turn both morning and evening.

Well.. because I want 18 players to play!

So basically, it comes down to this.. two options..

1) Play 18 Player PBEM, which will just operate on this basis on play your turn and pass it on, which means at times alot of turns could take place in an hour, but at other times 1 player could hold up the process for a while...

or.. 2) Wait for Pitboss, then have maybe like 2 turns per day, where alll 18 players log into the server at Pitboss, and play their turn twice a day..

Correct?

Well it's pretty much about all 18 players willing to commit some time every day to play their turn.. which I'll ask each and every one of you..

Committing time each and every day is the easy part. Actually getting your turn during the time you have committed may not be easy. I could be sitting here from 8pm-midnight, yet if the turn is not sent to me until 1am, it won;t get played for quite some time, causing a serious slow-down. If this happens 3 times in a day and each player is delayed 8 hrs, you have then lost an entire day...

Joe

Hey I am really new as you'll notice with my post number at this. But I love Civ I play it every day anyway so you can count on be to play a turn a day. Sign me up. I prefer America or Germany But if those have been taken somebody scientific please.

Sign me up. I'll take any Civ.

How many we got so far? We starting after the patch?

Paul.

I just redid the first post, make it look all nice and stuff... we have 8, so we need another 10.

Now, what I need off everyone is.... (if you've already provided it, then disregard)...

- email
- Time Zone
- Preferred playing times (2 most common times you'll play)
- Preferred Civ/Leader
- Your in-game Leader name, Civ Name (singular, plural etc)

The preferred playing times will allow me to sort out what order we go in terms of turn playing.... it may help, may not.. but it's better than a random order...

And considering the patch just got released.. v 1.09 this time.. we'll be playing post-patch =)
