2 100 man unit screenshots

that will just make sure they die one at a time rather than in lumps on 10 i guess.

but once the sdk comes out, im sure its possible to reduce the quality of the models and skins.

Cool! If you can get them in formation then it'd be most excellent! I've been wanting a mod very much like this for the Civ games for along time now and even tried to do it with Civ 2 with little success. But that'd cool now that the individuals in the unit are scaled more properly than usual.

In 3 years, it won't be so bad on newer machines.

Civ IV has great potential. The models are so low poly, and so memory optimized, I ma sure many of todays High end pc's canhandle graphics like this.

I would say 100 is extreme, but I would like to make infantry squads of at least 8, and half the size of the 3 figure units. That way the giant death robots could look bigger, and battleships as well.

I see those are both zoomed in to the maximum zoom. Is it possible to tell these units apart when zoomed out to a playable distance?

Otherwise, this looks great, Snoopy :D

Gogf, instead of scaling each individual unit, I just adjusted the unit auto-rescale depending on what zoom level you are at, this is a much faster way of scaling the units. I scaled them to a proportinate size; I also increased the height of the hills and mountains (can you tell?)

To others: Actually, they don't fight 1 unit at at time; I can set it so they all attack at the same time, or 50 attack, or 1 attack, whatever really.

FormationsXML.gif

Just posting a screenshot of the XML Formations file (this is the battle section)

Notice there are 4, I don't know why..

Dom Pedro, its not as bad as you think

600

I put in a settler with 500 people
and one swordsman of 100 was on the screen too

it slowed down a fair bit lol

Oh in another test, I put in two sets of archers, 100 in each, I set them to all attack at once, it was very cool to watch all these arrows flying everywhere.. :)

haha, I just had a vision of 10 artillery's attacking a city at once, that would be great to watch!!

i would settle for at an extreme of 50 people per unit... realy dont go over what you dont need to... i would say like 20 for the foot soldiers, and smaller numbers for the bigger units, 3 for planes maybe 2 for sea ships, 5 for mounted units, stuff like that get my drift?

The reality is it's all about the number of polygons. Smaller is fine, so long as there are fewer polygons as well. At least, that's my lamen's understanding of the issue.

If you could balance the coolness of these mini-armies with the efficiency required to run it, this could be one of the coolest graphics mods ever. And I'm saying that as someone who really doesn't care too much about graphics, and is rarely impressed. You might just make me a believer.

Sooo.. that would actually be 2 units then wouldn't it? :p

Oh, I see what you're saying

yes, 2 units, lol

ok, so if you had 6 units of 100 men, then your game will run slow

:(

oh btw, people, I am just testing, I am not setting the mod at these numbers..

Since there are more units on the map later on in the game and also that they are more advanced, they should steadily get fewer in number, so that the marine have 5-10 man squads while the warrior could have dozens of men per unit. That would help in the late stages.

My first thought was to remember the 100-nuke screenshots that were posted here. It'd probably be like the fighters, and only use a single missile for the animations, but would the explosion change size? The reason I ask is I'm going to mod in a Planet Buster missile for my future tech mod, and I want that megaexplosion on each one.

superb idea, great logic, im all for this...

oh and snoopy, seeing as how your not making this a mod yet, why not join up with the guy who is doing the realism mod, do the multi units for him

The BEST way to be able to make this possible IMO would be to create a new human model with no more than like 100 polys... even less would be better, but that's the max I'd say. At the size you have your units now, it probably wouldn't look bad either.

Which is also good because at the size you have them, the detail of the model is largely lost and so it would actually be really easy to come up with lots of different flavor units just by skinning them. Reducing the texture map size is a must too.. I'm not sure what the current size is.
