I'm just working on a mod, (currently trying to work out the very confusing formation xml files), just thought some of you might like to see this:

Neat, but won't that be horribly system-heavy with more than a few units on screen?

OMFG!!!

Snoop does it again, very nice!

Quick question, is this very processor intensive if a few are on screen?

if only we coudl the praetorians and such to march in formation!

Notice how I scaled the units down? I'm not sure if that helps..

I had no slow downs when I did this, but then again, I was on Small Map size and there is no progression in the game at all (still at 4000BC, for testing purposes)

Xen, it might be possible, I am toying around with the formation xml file, (but with no success yet.. :( ).

Tacit, I just tried it, for some reason it only attacks with 1 jet, but I do see 20 when they are idle

I'd prefer some units like navies and aircraft to be a large size though anyway. This has got me excited, put a couple hundred of them down and see how it affects game speed.

If a normal size unit attacks one one of your lickle army type ones, does he spend ages killing every single individual guy like gozilla? That would get annoying fast.

Would be nice if when they die a 3rd of them all fall over dead each time instead of 1 at a time.
Makes your armies seem larger and them being real battles.

Its nice with soldiers, but with aircraft, seeing small squad of 3 jets instead of 1.
Ships only need to be 1, as they are large.

But will be a very nice mod so it looks more like real armies, reminds me a little of Black and white 2.

No scaling down makes it worse, you still got the detailed models and textures, and the game is rendering more of them at once..... you would need LODs(these are individual models and skins which are of different quality, they switch to lower quality when far away and higher quality when close up) im not sure if Civ 4 has them.... but anyway you should scale down the models and textures in terms of quality, not size

Wow!

Now if you could put the spearmen into a real phalanx formation, or make the Romans fight in tightly formed cohorts...

But then again, that'd probably make my computer roll over and die. :(

Anyhow, it's well worth investigating into. Keep up the excellent work! :goodjob:

(wonder if I used enough smilies in this post)

Very nice. Are they fighting in that lower shot?

Scaling down helps up to some point, since recent graphics cards have a lot more vertex-transformation than pixel-filling power. However, there is some overhead involved in each operation and since each unit is drawn as one operation (I suppose), there comes a point when most of the time is spent for this overhead.

I think 100 is a bit too much though. Maybe 10 or so would be a more feasible choice?

For me, processing power isn't a problem, at least when they get this game working under Cedega. I've got a dual AthlonXP 2600+ with 3GB of RAM and GeForce 6600GT here. It's running Linux though, which is why I currently have to put up with a Duron 1200MHz with 768MB and GeForce 4 Ti4200... And it can't even handle the 3-man units without slowing down so much it's hard to play.

you could give say warriors 100 hitpoints and 100 attack

and axement 500 hitpoints and 500 attach and so on

this willensure hordes of these buggers dieing each turn
