(2-NS) France UA's GWAM replaced with theming bonuses doubled and granting production

The thing I balk at is that there seems to be this sentiment that theming as a mechanic is so irredeemable that the notion a civ would augment that system offends people, mainly by reminding them that theming exists. If a mechanic was truly that awful then it should be removed, but it's clearly not THAT bad. It's just bad enough to some people that they want to make sure that no one else play the game differently from them, or like something that they don't like. I find the discussion about the idea of a theming bonus starts to sound very prescriptive about what it is that you should and should not like about playing civ.

I think it was a fair question to ask if anyone is interested in theming bonuses. As the answer was yes, we should keep them. And why not have a civ that specialises in them? I'm not a big fan of theming bonuses as I mostly play conquest. So no big joy about moving France in that direction. But also no pain. If other people like it, let them have it. There are more than enough interesting warmonger civs out there.

While the theming bonuses would be more unique than free GWAM points, what is the point then of France's attack bonus?
The synergy is that France's :c5culture::c5production: from theming bonus can be boosted by city conquest, but that in turn asks for some sort of military bonus, which the Espirit de Corps ability provide. Basically, France's UA has three parts that follow a logic on how to play the civ.

As far as I know, people aren't against France's current combat ability, so I see no point in changing it. And I was aiming to only address the GWAM part; I am not aiming for rewriting France's themes.

As of note, a variation I had in mind for France was to make Espirit de Corps provide double bonus vs Cities (a.k.a. 20% :c5strength: CS per previous attack in the turn, instead of the usual 10% :c5strength:), or (alternatively) if the attacker is an artillery unit, as the replacement for the GWAM part, no theming bonus at all. The idea was that the 40% :c5culture::c5production: on conquest was already huge by itself and GWAM is overkill, so it makes sense to enhance France's conquering ability instead. If someone is not interested in theming bonuses, want an alternative and like something along this line, feel free to suggest it.

It's not so clear to me. I'd be perfectly happy with the mechanic removed from the game. It has the same value to me as the dancing minigame in Pirates. Tedious (it's like rearranging your bookshelves), pointless (what does this mechanic have to do with 4x gameplay at all), and not fun.

I don't agree with you. I think it very nice mechanic and fun. I always do it manually. Computer doesn't do it well.
