I installed the 1.21f patch, and played on a Huge map, at regent level. Barbarian activity was at raging. I played against the 15 other civs.

2 things happened. First, all the colors of the civs were mixed up. America was grey instead of india, persia used greece's green, etc... I'd like to know what factor controls those colors (I went to the editor, and every civ's color looked okay).

Next, something happened to me, and that's a first. During the first few thousand years, I frequently met barbarians, and dealt with them. A couple warriors, later on horsemen weren't much of a problem. But then, on a turn, without apparent reason, 2 stacks of 24 barbarian horsement just came within visible distance of an exploring archer. Also, almost at the other end of the continent, another stack of horsemen just came out of the darkness to attack other units. I guess there was also about 24 horsemen in that stack, because I killed about 10 of them and they still continued to appear. It's the first time I see that much barbarians in 1 shot, and I always play at Raging Hordes (well, the maximum barbarian activity). Any explanation for that? Is it just that the barbarians built up while I was too slow to explore?

I Don't about the colors being messed up, but i do seem to remember someone saying something like that in the "Rate the 1.21f patch" thread.

As for the barbarian part, I've had that happen quite a few times. Playing on various difficutly lvls from chieftan to deity. It always seemed to happen on 1.17 whenever i didn't have time to deal with it. Sometimes i would get a message from my military advisor saying "we have heard reports of a massive barbarian uprising near xxxx".

well just my 2 sense hope it helps out :)

I got that message about a massive barbarian upraising.

But the stacks of barbarians didn't appear near the city concerned by the upraising.

What causes those upraising? When you discover a barbarian tribe and don't kill it right away?

You'll get that message whenever there is a barbarian camp within 5 or so tiles of your border. You won't always be able to see the camp for you to get the warning about it.

Anytime barbarian camps are left alone for long periods of time, they will start increasing in numbers. 'Raging Hordes' level, it doesn't take long for those barbarians to mount a large force.

Yeah, if you have any unsettled land on your continent it's best to just take some horsemen or cavalry and patrol continuously or they'll mess you up.

Good news is you'll get lots of elite horsemen or cavalry - send these back to your cities, and send out some more, so when you're at war you'll have mostly elites fighting to increase the number of great leaders.

Since barbarians are indeed such a pain, why not TURN THEM OFF??

They're not too much of a problem generally. It's just that I had never seen that much at the same time. I'll just go with more patrols, and it should be okay.

All barbarian camps will make the uprising the same turn, so if there are 10 active camps, all will spawn 24 horsemen the same turn. I don´t know why Firaxis desgined it this way, but that´s how it works.

Maasive uprisings aren`t new. but with 1.21 all civs use amyn more troops, so I guess they jacked up the barbs as well.
