20 years of Civ3, and a proposal for 20 more

I'd be interested in helping as well. I can do some surface level programming, but probably would be more useful working on units, terrains, civs, leaders, sounds, art, etc... I could lend a hand with the civilopedia as well.

Do you guys use a discord server to discuss on the fly, or just all on Github? If you want to use my discord server, I'd be happy to make a separate sub-channel.

Now that you've mentioned it. Civ 2 and 3, OpenTTD, Wesnoth are the only titles that stuck with me over the years. Of these only Civ 3 is so limited in modding.

And Garlic Swordsmen
Firaxis started it! With their Easter Eggs and dinosaur units!

(Also, why is a T-Rex not a mainline unit? It'd look great and could be developed with ‘genetics’ as the US UU instead of the F-15)

And another question. Is it going to rely on existing Civ 3 installation in any way?

Initially, yes. Eventually, only if you want it to. Relying on an existing installation at first makes it easier to get everything else up and working, at least at a basic level. But there is a goal to gradually reduce and eventually eliminate that dependency. That's where the need for replacement assets comes in, whether those are already-created community content, or something new.

(I see I was tagged in the OP, so I'll note that I've been doing some programming on the project, and occasional coordination. I'll leave most of the questions to WildWeazel and others as appropriate, so if I don't answer your question it's because I think it would make more sense for one of them to do so)

I suppose that you could just borrow a terrain pack e.g. Sn00py's to start with.

Ooh, I am certainly interested. Not sure how much help I'd be (if nothing else, I can do some writing :D) or what the scope of the remake will be, but this could be something like Skyblivion, even.

All of that will be needed in due time!

Thank you for the offer. Which server is that? I'm on a few but I'm not sure who's who. I think we probably will want to be on Discord at some point, but then it would probably make sense to just set up our own. It might be nice to have an informal real-time chat in the meantime though.

edit: to answer your question, we have a private subforum which we'll be opening up here as soon as we get a bit more organized. Expect more news soon!

Rec Room is mine, not a huge place, about 12 or so civvers in there. I'm Nanuk on there. If you guys want anything on that server for something just let me know. Otherwise send me an invite when you get yours up and running. Would love to be part of it.

I was just struck by the thought that one can trade goods (resources both strategic and luxuries, gold both lump sum and per turn), intangible goods i.e. techs and even people (units, workers usually) but whoever made the Civ games never decided to enable transfers of food or shields.

We should look into this.

That's a great one to ponder Tak.

Now, am I dreaming or was that actually possible in the earlier civ games?

I'm likely mistaking for something else..

Transfers of shields can be justified, e.g., as transfers of electric power. Check out the shared hydroelectric dams at Yaciretá or Itaipú. Shared wonders and special locations could be interesting.

It's a factor of production. In all civ games, commerce can be liquidly traded between cities and civs. In Civ2 you could send caravans into other cities and turn them into shields, effectively trading shields between cities. In SMAC, crawlers could at least harvest resources, and I think they could also send factors of production to other cities or even allied cities.

A couple of new city sets (Samoa and Mali)

I'm not sure how that would even work. Has it been done in other 4X games?
I've just remembered that in Rome: Total War (the original one) you could agree to general trade deals with other factions, which meant that your cities wouldn't just trade with your other cities but also with the enemy other faction's, which meant that both you and the other faction got increased trade i.e. a higher income at the cities affected by the trade deal.

Shields-per-turn from city A to city B should be transferable. After all, mega power plants supply more than one city in the same country, don't they?

As I have a lot of fun playing with the dinosaurs in Test of Time, I m all in favor of making them standard units. There is something uniquely terrifying about seeing a T-Rex heading for your city. I admit to boosting my dinosaurs a bit. Maybe more than a bit.:D:D:D:D

This is the exactly the kind of thing Civ 3 needs to ensure the community still has Culture in 2050!

Great job on the work so far. I have very limited coding knowledge, but am more than happy to volunteer services for 'pedia Articles, in-game text strings, and static graphics for opensourceification when the time comes. But I wont start pouring the gravy when the bird's still in the oven, creating a working game using the assets we have is the priority

And, if remembering well, Civ 2 has the option to send food by caravans to other own cities, too.

We should be allowed to transfer population, even if at the cost of population unhappiness. After all, already you can build settlers and workers and join them to another city.
