For a fast 20k game (suppose you turn off SGLs to remove luck)... which would you rather have... more hills or more forests? More mountains or more forests? Oh... forget hills with sugar in them also, since I know I'd certainly prefer those.

Some forests in range is certainly good, since it allows chopping for shields as well as an early 2s1f square to work (which is similar to a mined hill in despotism).

However once you get out of despotism, hills are unquestionably superior (3s 1f). If the said hill have iron, it's up to 4s.

20K games take hundreds of turns, so I'd rather have lots of hills (provided I have some food bonuses, but then usually I do).

My experience says hills. The early wonders you build in despotism are extremely important, and a forest chop for the temple is very good, but hills seem to compensate more than enough later in the game. Hopefully you have at least one forest tile to chop for the temple, even if you have hills around.

Hopefully you have a spot with food bonus nearby so you'll be able to get the workers you need in order to improve the hills early.

Hills in combination with cattle is the perfect start.

I'd have to say...both. I want a couple of forests (preferably on BG's) that I can chop early for a temple or library. I also want some hills, for the high shield production for later in the game. oh, and a food bonus. In short, if I'm going for 20K, I want a pretty much perfect start.

3 votes hills, 1 forests so far. I voted forests. Why? I had a *great* Deity 20k game here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=296795. I had only 1 hill, no mountains, but 4 to 6 forests (and a slew of cows). Maybe I chopped one of them. I don't think chopping them such a good idea even though it does temporarily boost production. I'll also take forests, because I don't have to develop them. Consequently, I can add in workers faster... a lot faster really, as mining a hill (or mountain) takes all too long. Sure, the hills will give me extra shields later, but since the best *total* culture/shield wonders come as the ones you'll build in despotism, I'll take that production sooner rather than later. 2 turns less on The Colossus, or The Oracle or The Pyramids translates to some nice extra culture once you consider the 1000 year bonus.
