2D Forever!

My computer isn't really up to speed so I've had to be playing in strategic mode. Now that I've spent so much time in it even once my computer is upgraded I don't think I could go to the 3d, I REALLY like the art style in the 2d. In fact I really like the whole art deco theme of the game, it and the 2d option are the only things that haven't disappointed me so far!

I'm thinking it might be cool to see if I can mod the game to startup directly into 2D and bypass loading all the 3D graphics.

I just love the 2d view and I play exclusively with that now. Sometimes when I start the game in 3d settings I take a look at my territory and it's just confuses me.

Two thumbs up for strategic view!

It is superior! Although I used both views and it was pretty confusing, as the distances seem much longer in strategic view, but in normal view, everything feels so clumped together. Not very eye friendly to play both. So I guess I'll play strategic view only in the future. I just don't like the icons of units that much, they aren't so easy to distinguish. I think the community manager person, who streamed Civ 5 before launch, said that it's very wrong to play only in strategic view. :-) I guess due to making all the work on 3D graphics pointless.

I only use the Strategic View to find strategic resources once I have the prerequisite tech. I find it confusing otherwise.

It's good to switch between the two I find, keeps the game fresh. SV is very good for battles. Funnily enough though to me SV seems to crash the game occasionally while normal view doesn't...

spooq, I think the main learning curve is the unit icons, once you master them the game becomes a lot easier to manage. I think a lot of people found it hard to see what was going on in the early days because we're subconsciously looking for Civ 4 icons.

One thing about SV that needs updating is that you can't see from a distance when the city is producing.

I have the same immersion problem, looking at this highly abstracted view just kills immersion for me. But it's still useful. I would love it a lot more if I could zoom out a bit farther, and if there was a view that made national borders and high level stuff like that more apparent. I.e. even more of a strategic view and less of a tactical one.

Yeah my only beef it that I wish it were a little "prettier" (I'm not a complete graphics Luddite :)) with some blending of the hex boundaries in the tile graphics, but I'm sure someone will do a nice icon replacement mod at some point.

I've no beef with that. I almost certainly prefer it this way too. Blending borders would just add more unnecessary processing and could go some way to make terrain harder to distinguish.

If I could vote, I'd say leave the terrain graphics just the way they are. :)

So does anyone else *only* play in the 2D strategic view? I'm so happy that Firaxis made the game entirely playable in this mode. It's like they gave us two versions of the same game. Perhaps the people still playing Civ 2 will finally upgrade to a new version of Civ. :)

I find that I get distracted and slowed down by the normal view so I play 99% of the time from the Strategic View.

I'm at work at the moment, so I can't check, but can you turn off the resource icons in 2D? If yes, would someone mind putting up a screenshot? :)

If not, that is something I'd like to try as a mod. Bigger unit icons (more wargame style) would be very nice too.
I was playing around with this last night. I believe you set it so either units/ resources, or improvements take up the full tile.

It was really helpful when I was looking over my empire to find any tiles I hadn't improved yet. Was a lot tricker when the icons were smaller.

Most annoying in 2d mode: Pressing esc puts you in 3d mode instead of opening the game menu... hopefully it gets fixed in some patch :)

I play 2D almost exclusively.

I just want an option to disable 3d altogether. That would be nice.

I haven't played in it but it is pretty keen.

Do you really save on the power required from your PC while in the game? I always figured they'd still be rendering stuff in the background for the non strategic view.

If you can't see it, it isn't rendered. Even the stuff just out of your field of view is dropped as early in the process as possible. Very little is wasted in 3D graphics. Oh, and that "2D" view? It will be 3D as far as your computer is concerned, just a relatively simple 3D.

In terms of using less power from the wall, GPUs do suck a lot of juice, and the new ATI ones at least are very good about turning bits of themselves off when not in use... but I doubt very much you'll notice on your electricity bill ;)
