ahh yes it is westpoint.... ( never went there) but those medals are interesting, that makes the 3rd picture of someone other than Chesty Puller... being a marine I dont think he went to West Point.
AH!! wait a min, it is Chesty puller, He was BORN in West Point VA.
Goes to show I should preview my post before posting it and leaving. The third picture should have been:
I got too clever with my numbered pictures
The answer I was looking for was indeed Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller
The first picture is not West Point, it is the Virginia Military Institute, where Puller attended classes for a year before dropping out and enlisting in the Marines. As far as I know, Puller is the only man to win five Navy Crosses. If I hadn't erred, the third picture would have depicted Patton, who was Puller's cousin. The last picture does focus on MacArthur, but Puller is on the left side. I had hoped Mac would distract viewers...
Anyhow, my apologies for making this too obvious (i.e., by actually putting a picture of Puller in third). Because cidknee said Puller first, question goes to him.
Hmm. Goebbels made of the Reichstagsfire an event that lead to the so called Ermächtigungsgesetz. The Crystal night was done by the SA under the order of Goebbels. Both were punished by Hitler for this action! Only the iron cross is confusing.
So I would have said SA or Goebbels.
Göring????? As he was the only one to wear the Großkreuz zum Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes (Grand Cross to the Knight´s Cross of the Iron Cross)? But I do not see any connection to the other pictures which is not too vague.
well yes it is goering.. supposedly ( according to his bio) he was instrumental instting up both the Reichtage Fire and the krystal night incident. Also he was a minister like Gobbels, and well the cross was a good indicator. Cmon gimme a break, i got it the right war AND with a 1 yr old swing ing a platic club at my pc... your turn Adler
well according wikipedia Göring was the only WWII recipient of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, awarded to him by Hitler for his leadership of the Luftwaffe during the conquest of France and the Low Countries. He avidly pursued additional decorations, in marked contrast to Hitler, who wore only what he earned in WWI.
but yeah wouldnt suprise me either
Okay here is my question:
During the Norwegian campaign of the German Kriegsmarine the German Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper under Captain Hellmuth Heye surprised the British destroyer HMS Glowworm in the Norwegian fjords. The destroyer had no chance against the heavy cruiser. The torpedo crew was killed by the 2 cm FlaKs of the cruiser and so the ship was doomed. Only mere a burning wreckage the ship rammed the cruiser and did some damage. The Glowworm sunk soon after. Her commander, Lt.Cdr. G.B. Roope, died with the ship. He later recieved the Victoria Cross. And exactly here is my question:
There is a certain formal action which is unique in history that Roope got the VC. What was this formal action?
Bingo. Captain Heye recommended Lt.Cdr. Roope for the VC. It was the only time in history that an order was given by the recommendation of an enemy officer.
Captain Heye got the Knights Cross in 1941 and ended the war as Vice Admiral. He was after the war charged by the Bundestag for the armed forces.
Admiral Hipper should do some damage to the allies. Her last voyage was in February 1945 to bring refugees out of Danzig. Together with her escort, fleettorpedoboat T 36 she met the position where the liner Gustloff was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine. Because of that danger the heavy cruiser was not able to help. She arrived Kiel safety. T 36 had to avoid 2 eels by the Soviet sub but was able to avoid and damage the enemy boat severly with depth charges. Unfortunately the Soviet boat escaped to sink another German liner shortly after... Admiral Hipper was damaged in the Kiel docks and scuttled to avoid being captured by the enemy.
Your turn Volum. Never thought it was so fast to be answered.
