3.13 patch, multiplayer, and loss of sync

Guys when you have OOS from right away it means you have different versions of the game. You probably installed unofficial patches here and there and now you're screwed. Try uninstalling and reinstalling everything.

This is not entirely accurate. I have OOS issues trying to play multi-player direct IP games quite frequently on certain games with my girlfriend and I know with 100% certainty that our versions and patches are identical.

I will not uninstall BTS and Vinalla just so I can get my game to work (my son ruined my vanilla cd so I cant reinstall vanilla even if I wanted to).

I'll echo that, x4. After all the time that's passed since civ4 came out, my hamachi lan group has (in terms of cds that we actually know where they are AND are still readable): 1civ4, 1warlords, 3BtS. Amoung 4 people at 3 different locations. (1civ4, 1warlords at location A, 1 warlords, 2 BtS at B, and 1BtS at C). Needless to say we're all trying to figure out a way to manually patch it without trying: "Lets all meet at 5:30 on 10/20/07 at some house between our locations."

(and no, none of us have ever installed any mods, maps, etc. that didn't come on the cds)

It's not just a matter of different versions/mods/whatever. There are other factors such as non-default installation locations (which should NOT be a factor, but because of the borked programming in the 3.13 patch, it is...).

So far it seems like the only way to be sure is to uninstall, manually delete all installation, user, and cache directories, and then install anew to the default location. I know this is problematic for people who have lost or damaged installation CD's, but maybe Firaxis will send you replacements.

Maybe put a cowbell on future DVDs bought? :p

The uninstall/reinstall method is the only sure way to remedy this at the moment. If you refuse to do so, or cannot do say as stated above, then I'm afraid your probably stuck.

If people offer you a solution to your issues that has worked for them, my advice is not to complain. I understand that people have had issues with this patch, but I have had none yet I still log onto these boards to see if I can help others having problems. I know that Firaxis messed up a little with the patch installer, but I'm just glad I'm not using 3.03 any more!

Just tried Direct IP game with a friend who bought his versions of vanilla Civ and Bts more or less when I did and has done all the identical updates I have. The only difference is that I have Warlords and he doesn't. And the only unofficial patch we have is Bhruic's patch of the 313 patch....

Guess what? OSS right from the very start! Reinstalling the game brings us into sync for a few turns (and occasionally no turn), but then the OSS message is back.

I think the best thing may be, as I think Bhruic suggests if I understand him correctly, is to copy my version of the game (minus Warlords) in its entirely to my friend's compter. Forgive my ignorance, but how can I do that? Or is there a better way?

That may be your only option, which is unfortunate because this would be considered piracy in some circles and yet it is one of the proposed fixes on this board.

Clean reinstall helped for a while, but after a game or two it's the same out of sync again. Looks like we have to downgrade civ for now. Until the next patch shows up

Not sure if this is much use to people, but I noticed that I was getting the OOS problem just as either player was getting a random event message e.g. tornado or some other kind of disaster. I started a game without random events and it now works fine. It's not ideal as it takes away one of the point of the expansion pack, but at least it enables multiplayer play to work. I guess I'll just have to wait for the 'patch of the latest patch' to use random events again.

I was wondering about this as well. It usually seemed to always be when a random event took place (except for the one instance where we started a new game).

My civ has never been modded, altered, or anything changed, except for official patches in-game.

None of the computers used in my multiplayer games have civ modded or altered in any way. Just the official patches.

I find when a random event happens on one computer, it doesn't appear on the others and before the end of the turn, the game goes out of sync. As I said in an earlier post, switching random events off seems to solve the problem. I don't know if this is the same for everyone, but to me, it seems to narrow the problem down to being a bug with random events.

It would appear at first sight that there's than more one problem causing going out of sync. From what you say, one would appear to be to do with random events. Others (myself included) have found the problem right at the start of the game, and also at other times not involving random events, which suggests that the files are somehow different in the computers involved. So, at least two, possibly more, instances of the same problem under different circumstances. But couldn't all these instances be related at a deeper level? That is, in all cases, a mismatch between the files used on each computer? It is this mismatch that 3.13 seems somehow to generate. In this case, a clean reinstall may solve the problem, but it would not be guaranteed because at the point of reinstalling 3.13 there would remain the possbility (let's hope slight) of generating a new mismatch.

(you on the fireaxis payroll?)

Well after reading some of the peoples responses that have unistalled/reinstalled that still doesnt seem to work either........

My point is I bought a game that comes with an auto update feature built into the game (correct?). I have always used this feature when updating my game because..... well I paid for it and in my opinion it was part of the cost of the game. I have read and reread the users manuel countless times looking to see where it says I need to install/reinstall after updates (tell me where it is and I will sheesh up).

Fact=patch does not work
Fact=Patch has blatant bugs (culture bonus/spy/etc)
Fact=It wasnt tested before released
Fact=I should not have to reinstall after an update (based on manuel)

Please fix my game or give me my money back then I will gladly unistall/reinstall all day long to get it to work (back to the I dont get paid to work on A GAME I BOUGHT).

Ok,

My Nephew did a roll back and a clean reinstall of the patch. He worked fine but then I was going out of synch.

I uninstalled BTS and then re-installed (this meant an clean re-install of 3.13 as well) and we worked fine for the first game.

I don't know how long it will last but we (Me, my Niece and Nephew) played fine for a few hours.

We'll see how long it last and post again later.

Possible Fix:

Tested the install directory for all civ4 stuff between 3.02 patch and 3.13 patch, only the BtS folder has changes. Tested BtS folder between 2 same sync players and 1 oos player, no significant difference. Tested the My docs/BtS folder, between 3 of us, no significant difference.

Lastly, tested C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Application Data\My Games\

The 2 in sync players matched perfectly. The oos player had mismatched: \Beyond the Sword\cache\CIV4EventInfos.dat, \Beyond the Sword\cache\CIV4EventTriggerInfos.dat (In addition to many differences in warlords folder). Tested 10turns of new game modern era with the entire \Beyond the Sword\cache folder copied from the in-sync players to the OOS player. Worked fine but we didn't see any random events (which some posts have said triggered the oos).

Next up, can anyone here who KNOWS they have a working patched version post their local settings\app data\my games folder? (it's only 3mb)

I also have this OOS bug with a friend of mine, and we kind of did some testing what causes the bug. Unfortunately we can´t reinstall because of a broken CDs, so I have to wait until Civ Complete arrives before I can (hopefully) fix this with a reinstall.

Tyler, we did as you advised and I copied my Cache folder to my friends PC. Unfortunately it didn´t work :(

But in the process of trying to figure out what´s wrong we played a bit with our game settings. Since some people mentioned the OOS could be related to the random events we started a game with random events turned off, and suddenly there was no OOS bug anymore! It definately seems to be connected to the random events. As soon as I turned the random events back on the OOS bug returned. We didn´t have time to test the game over a longer period, but about 40 turns ran by without error when the random events were turned of.

This seems to be some kind of solution until there is a proper fix by firaxis, but on the other side random events are one of my favourite features of BtS :(

Now if anybody could confirm this behavior I think this would help a lot of people play Civ in Multiplayer mode. Perhaps it´s even possible to fix this problem by modifying the random event game files in some kind of way?

Let´s hope that there´ll be a patch soon.

I had the same problem in a LAN game on Vista. I want to give everyone here a BIG thank you for tracking the solution down. Following the advice here, I copied the entite BTS cache file to the other PC's and viola no more OOS problems. The entire path on a Vista PC is

C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\My Games\Beyond the Sword

If you cannot see the folders, go into folder options and make sure the 'Show hidden folders' box is checked.

Thanks again everyone. Much easier than a complete uninstall/reinstall.

We also had several random events occur after doing the above without any OOS occuring.

Since some people mentioned the OOS could be related to the random events we started a game with random events turned off, and suddenly there was no OOS bug anymore! It definately seems to be connected to the random events.

I have had what I would call acute OSS, but testing turning off random events as suggested by DelphieDie I have found that it does indeed cure the OSS problem. This would indicate that somehow the problems are related to these files, even though the OSS does not necessarily occur when a random event actually takes place (in my case we were getting the message as soon as the game starts).

After some more testing I found out the following:

If you get the OOS Error immediately after starting a game this can be fixed by turning of random events in the game options.

But there is a better way to fix this error:

As Tyler found out this problem seems to be caused by corrupted game cache Files. This can easily fixed by the following steps:

Navigate to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Application Data\My Games\

In this folder is another folder called "beyond the sword". This folder contains your game profile and some cache data. You must either delete or simply rename this folder.

After you do this start BtS. You now will have to reset your graphic and game settings. After you did this you can start a new game and there shouldn´t be any more problems. I hope this works for other people too, for me it did. Remember that every player should follow this procedure.

Edit: I also tested a LAN game between me (Civ 4 + Warlords + BtS) and another friend (Civ 4 Complete). The game is starting without a problem and without the OOS error. We both are running Bhruic´s 1.07 Patch.
