Is the exchange rate still around 2USD to a pound? If so that seems pretty expensive for your needs. Have you looked at the Asus EEEPC? It sounds like you don't need a very powerful system, might be worth a look. One thing about these ultra portable notebooks is the tiny keyboard. Are you going to be comfortable writing papers on it? Have you seen one in person? Going up to a 14 or 15 inch screen might be worth the extra case size. I'm a big fan of Dell's Vostro line of laptops. They're under the business section of Dell's website, but it's not a problem for individuals to order them.
