Hello, I have been playing my mod on the gigantic map. Tet Turkhan's huge map, 300+ by 300+ squares and I have just tried to put down a new city ( i have over 20 cities and there are 29 other computers), anyway a message popped up saying "too many cities". The game is running okay, slow in loading terms, but other than that why is the game limiting my cities? Is there a way around this??

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Shane

There is a maximum number of cities for the entire map. I'm not sure on the exact number but I believe it is around 500. There is a limit on the total number of units too.

The city limits and unit limits for C3C are 512 and 8192, respectively. The unit limit was doubled from Vanilla Civ and PTW (which was 4096), but the city limit has stayed the same.

That absolutey blows, my computer is running fine with 512 cities right now. I played a game on the 186*186 world map with my mod and never hit the limit. So there is no way for me to change the limit then i guess? I've never come close to the unit limit so Im not worried about that one...

Thank you for the information.

Shane.

The limit is hardcoded, so yes, that means you can't change it. :(

You normally won't hit the limit in most games even over the size of huge.

Let's say you play a 200 x 200 map. That's ~40,000 tiles, and if there is 60% water, it leaves ~16,000 tiles for land. Divide that by the 21 tiles per city, and you get ~762 cities - of course, if you had all these cities, you'd probably reach the domination limit, so I don't think it's much of a problem (though it would be nice if it wasn't hardcoded).

city and unit limits are annoying. somebody needs to teach these guys about dynamic resource allocation.

ok i got that off my chest.

29 other computers? ok now THAT livingroom must be something to see ;)

but seriously ... 30 x 20 =600 cities. i think you bumped into the limit.

You could (and this will sound wierd) decrease the Optimal City Number. This will keep the AI from building as many cities. It will increase corruption though.

You won't start bumping into the limit until you get up to about 256 x 256. Even then, if you don't allow cities on Tundra or Desert, you can pretty much fill it up. Anything bigger than that is a waste.

It's the number of cities on a map (it changes for the different sizes) that is the limit of cities before, quote from the editor, "rampant corruption occurs. If a player exceeds this number of cities, corruption dramatically increases, regardless of how far away from the capital a city is." So raising that limit would increase corruption, but make the AI want to settle less due to corruption.

You could always do that and make courthouses cheaper.
