MacOS / iOS devices use a different form of display-scaling compared to a simple regular increase in resolution. I'm more aware of the specifics around iPads and iPhones (CSS targets for mobile design, etc), but I'd imagine it's a similar principle (display density scaling) for MacOS Retina devices too.
In other words, catering to MacOS devices would be easier in theory than catering to the wide range of 2.5k+ monitor displays that exist for sale on the Net.
