6otM 118 AAR

GOTM is about fun to me, it’s about the mods going to the effort of finding a decent map to play.
I sift through at least 20 starts for a fun map, some times I have no idea which win condition I should be trying for. Of late I have been trying to get the various achievments for each leader as a possibility which is I think is fun.

T86 CV

(Note: HoF states 85 which doesn’t make sense since at the beginning of T86 I didn’t have enough tourism yet.) While it could have been faster, I could not repeat it as this took insane luck to get two Relics (one TV, one trade) early.

-Overall Plan.
Monopolies!
- Since this was a TSL map, I started pre-game by setting up a random game with Egypt starting in the Info Era to launch an Earth Satellite to see how many of luxury resources I would need to get monopolies. I decided the best ones would be Olives, Diamonds, Incense, and Ivory. Also thought Citrus and maybe Wine – never got Wine, but did have a settler headed to try to get a couple wine. Assumed I would need to fight Nubians and Zulu if they were on the map, but they turned out not being there.
Tourism – Plan was to get monopolies to crazy increase tourism of primarily writers and wonders with the hope of being able to martyr some Apostles (got two relics, never built any apostles).

- What did you prioritize for research and policies?
Research
: AH, Pottery, Irrigation, Mining, Wheel, Writing (wanted some heavy science for Flight – not needed), Astrology (for Religion with Reliquaries), BW, Currency (for Industries), Sailing, Masonry, Archery,…, 84-Cartography (never made it to North and South America)
Policies: CoL, FT, EE, Craft, SW, PolPhil, Mys, D&P, G&R, DefTac, Feudalism,…,, Divine Right (as I won)

- Did you bother with Religion?
Yes. Absolute key component to this win. Production early and reliquaries later.
20 – Pantheon, Lady of the Reeds and Marshes
68 – Religion, Reliquaries

- How did you pump your Tourism?
Base tourism maxed out at 65: +48 (2 relics), +8 (holy city), +9 (two wonders).

One relic I found in a TV on T41. Met Mali on T48 and they had a relic, but wouldn’t trade it for all my gold. Eventually on T56 I decided to offer all my luxuries (only had 1 of each at this point), 30+ horses, and all my 30+ GPT. They took the trade. I decided to declare war the same turn since their capital had 1 diamond and 2 ivory in ring 3. I don’t like this ability to attack after a trade, but used it this game. Wish Civ would limit this (just make permanent trades not be tradable for per turn items). While it did speed up the win since I immediately recovered my 30+ gpt, even without it I would still likely been sub-100 as I brought on trades for all the luxuries I was about to get in other cities. If I couldn’t do it, I would have likely waited to trade for the relic until I had monopolies up so may have been just as fast and not caused a worldwide denouncement of me.

T78 -first monopoly that just snowballed with 5 monopolies that I had exclusive control over the luxuries to eventually give me over +1000% tourism; monopolies increased tourism to the range of 436 to 783 for the 6 AI I had met.

The turn I won getting the win screen surprised me it went so quickly. I didn’t even have a monopoly until T78 and 8 turns later the game was over. I was still thinking about meeting other civilizations as well as pumping out writers and wonders.

- How did you pump your science?
Three campuses (+4, +4, +3). First one wasn’t until T71 and ended up being a distraction and waste of time.

- Were City-States helpful?
Yes, some I captured for expansion. My military consisted of 1 scout, 3 warriors, 1 heavy chariot (from meteor), and 3 MCAs.

Captured in order: Jerusalem, Mogadishu, Ngaz…, then AI – Mali capital, Akkad, Hattusa. I would have kept going, but didn’t need to so stopped. Some others I became Suzerain to include overtaking Fez from Mali – should have just captured Fez, but at the time I was still thinking of the science bonus.

- Any surprises you ran into, how did you deal with it?
Nothing too bad; the actual CS and AI were a surprise I couldn’t predict. Jerusalem surprised me by heading SW with the settler – missed out on stealing it as my warrior had already headed SW, but may have worked better letting it settle to get to a pantheon quicker. Missed out finding Europe in the Ancient Era – I thought I’d get a scout from a TV, but never got one. I did get a free trader that was killed 2 turns later by a barbarian. The big one was the relic.

By the end of the Ancient era on T60 I’d found: 10 CSs – none of the ones in Europe, 3 AI (India, Vietnam, Mali – who found me with a scout)

- How was the huge tsl map??
Very fun.

- Did you enjoy the game?
Absolutely! I hadn’t played on a TSL map in a very long time.

CV T83

Very similar game to @Eyswein, except that I got more lucky: I ended up with 3 relics (1 from TV, 1 from Mansa Musa & 1 from Kristina)
It's incredible the amount of pre-planning you can do with prior map knowledge (TSL map) which is incredibly helpful for determining which luxury monopolies you should aim for.

Tourism
Relics (3): 72RT
Holy City: 8RT
Wonders (3): 8T

Cities
14 cities (+3 settlers on their way)
I captured the Jerusalem settler on T2
Bordeaux flipped to me through pressure
The 3rd wandering settler I got from Barbarians very late (probably stolen from Mali) which I sent East without much purpose.
My 14 cities + 2 settlers + Ngazargamu + 2 Malian cities + Venice & Zanzibar suzerainty would have provided full monopolies over Olives, Diamonds, Incense, Citrus, Wine and Ivory.

Monopolies

Olives: 7/7
Diamonds: 6/10
Incense: 8/10
Citrus: 5/5
Wine: 6/6

Other luxuries:
Ivory: 6/11
Amber: 1/12
Cotton: 1/12
Pearls: 1/12

This was a nice occasion to test (the new?) monopoly formula on the wiki. However, the numbers are still slightly off and it is driving me nuts...***
Code:
3% 11 7 231% Olives
3% 10 6 180% Diamonds
3% 11 8 264% Incense
3% 11 6 0% Ivory
3% 11 5 165% Citrus
3% 11 6 198% Wine
                1038%

A full monopoly of the previous 6 luxuries would theoretically yield a +1617% modifier
Code:
3% 11 7 231% Olives
3% 11 10 330% Diamonds
3% 11 10 330% Incense
3% 11 11 363% Ivory
3% 11 5 165% Citrus
3% 11 6 198% Wine
                1617%

*** Originally, the numbers were slightly off, but I corrected them after accounting for the following 2 discrepancies which I found after doing some testing:
1. The Amani Influence promotion does not provide an additional copy/node (despite increasing the number in the resources tab).
2. Luxuries within the territory of city-states you are suzerain of increase the number of nodes for the calculation of the monopoly tourism modifier even if they are not improved (and not appearing in the resources tab)
