STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed at least 80 to 100 turns in your game.

This thread is used to discuss the game once you've started playing through your first 100 turns. Apart from normal decency, the only posting restrictions are to please not post videos until the deadline is finished and to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. Please remember that we are running a family friendly site, so express anger or frustration with this in mind.

Please use this thread to discuss your goals for the game and your opening moves through the first 100 turns. Anything after that should be posted in the After Actions thread once you have completed your game.

- What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?
- How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
- Where did you settle your capital city? Why? Your second city? Why?
- Early order for technology/civics? What did you prioritize for technology/civics?
- What was your early build order in your capital and other early cities? Military units / Civilian units / Districts & city development / Wonders / Civ Unique Unit & Infrastructure? Most critical or interesting?
- Pantheon chosen and why? Religious beliefs chosen, and why?
- What governments did you select? What policy cards did you use? Why?
- Which Governors did you choose and why did you choose them?
- How long did it take to find your neighbors? What did you do for early diplomacy/trading? Peace or War (and by you or them)?
- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you nurture to your side?
- When did you have Dark/Golden ages?
- How did the game modes affect or impact your play?

- How were the Barbarians?
- Any surprises/frustration/elations?

Please use spoiler tags for any surprise details you'd like kept hidden. Thanks.

Science Victory Turn 293 Score 1160

The game was peaceful until the turn rollover on the last turn. Then Babylon declared on either me or an ally. Probably on me. I built a few wonders and a few of the Corporation resource thingies. I only got 1 golden age, although I came close a couple of times. I did run a bunch of campus projects and got a few great people, some I bought.

Science Victory, turn 289.

Interested again to see that Monthar was able to achieve an essentially identical time but peacefully! I started out wanting to play peacefully, but after settling about 6 cities my empire was stagnating somehow, and I decided to use Teddy's +5 advantage against Korea (and then Scotland), figuring that these civs would certainly have campuses to offer.

But was very badly delayed due to the high natural disaster settings- the first time they have made such a critical difference in the game for me. Was waiting for a Great General to press an offensive in the early Medieval with men-at-arms, and had accumulated 118/120 points towards the final one when a massive blizzard wiped out my encampment. I had spent my faith, and by the time I recovered the encampment another civ had gotten the general, and I had to wait for the next era general which required 240 points (I didn't think I had enough military strength to prevail without the help of a General). So my warmongering was delayed pretty much one full era, and didn't get started until the Renaissance. I also lost the Casa de Contracion (sp?) wonder by just 2 turns, which would also have made a fair difference. C'est la vie.

Didn't manage to build Kilwa but acquired it after conquering most of Scotland. Didn't even find the second scientific city state (Fez) until very very late, so major science bonuses didn't kick in until very late. Did establish a religion, which helped a lot for culture in the early game (World Church) and allowed me to faith-buy some universities (Jesuit Education), but never completed it or tried to spread it.

Fun game. Still need to learn how to develop such massive cities and output peacefully....

Managed to win an SV on turn 248.

Almost entirely peaceful game, apart from Korea declaring a very unsuccessful war on me around turn 100. I settled my first three cities (Washington, Cincinatti, and Los Angeles - in that order) as quickly as possible and focused on getting campuses and improvements up ASAP. Then settled Philadelphia in the northern desert hills turn 50-60, as this was going to be a massive Petra city. As expected, it became my supercity with >200 production towards the end game. Ended up purchasing a Space Port with Reyna in there to get projects done ASAP. Pingala was used with early Oracle and Grants to generate a lot of GPP in the capital. Maussoleum was chopped with Magnus in Los Angeles to get juicy culture, science, and faith + extra great engineer charges. Combined with a fairly early turtles industry and Liang fisheries, Los Angeles generated a significant amount of science.

As I was afraid of stagnating with only very few cities and not very good land, I decided to colonize an island to the west, taking advantage of Hic Sunt Dracones and settlers bought with gold. Builders were bought to chop campuses and libraries/universities in these cities, and a single IZ was set up to power all these cities. Also met two scientific and two cultural city states with decent timing, as I finished Kilwa around turn 130 in Cincinatti (messed up one chop, which delayed it by around 8 turns).

Washington was initially going to be my super-city and produce space race projects, but a few unfortunate things happened: 1) It didn't have great food yields and was stuck on 4-5 population for a veeery long time, and it really needed farms with feudalism buff to grow. 2) Turns out, farms were not going to work in Washington, mainly because of droughts - a LOT of droughts. I must have had 8 consecutive droughts hit the majority of my farms and preventing me from placing any NW of my capital for around 50 turns. 3) Wanted to build Ruhr valley in Washington, as I think it had 10-15 potential mines. With one turn left, I lost it to Hammurabi.

Very fun game with a challenging start, and some unfortunate events ("hrrrm droughts"). Am a little impressed that I didn't rage quit haha. I am wondering if offensive wars againt Korea and Scotland would have been viable, as they had a lot of useful scientific infrastructure. Their strong science might, however, mean that would have early crossbowmen or other strong units that would be able to effectively push back an invasion.

SV T282. I was still at 2 cities at about turn 70, but constant city spam with Government plaza resulted in 17 self settled cities. Starting land mass had 7, Eastern island had 1 and total 9 cities were founded on 4 different Western land masses. Tedious work this kind of settling game. I was peaceful all game, as often happens in continents maps, there was no contest for territory with the AI, as the desert blocked their (and partially my) expansion to that direction. However, Babylon proved a real challenge towards SV (others did not contest it for some reason), they sent their expedition about 10 turns before me, but stayed at 1 light year / turn the whole time and I beat them. I had 4 (3 gold purchased, 1 built in capital) space ports.

A rare game in a sense that I did not build a single wonder. Should probably have built Petra as @Two Tales above, but kind of forgot about it, though it was available very late. Missed the proper engineers as well. Also, last prophet went really late - AI showed little interest in them and then a resolution further banned GP points generation for an era. I did not want it either. I had the strategic resources pantheon, which proved quite useful with lots of iron and horses and some other strategics as well.

An interesting game in the sense that there were probably hand picked science heavy AIs, which meant that early GS were impossible to get and also later game very challenging, though I did achieve GS/turn leadership some time around T150. I lost a lot of good GS, but got the one with +100% space projects, which was good, though I don't know if that affects the boosters (probably not?).

Quite useless CS in this map, though I did get some benefits from the at least. Probably suzerain of about 4-5 CS most of the game. Unfortunately I did not really utilize any of America's abilities, UB or UU, so it was like playing a vanilla civ. I like the Corporations game mode and I had a lot of monopolies and 2 corporations (though I didn't make any products and never have).

Barbarians were quite tame in this game, though I had a camp alive in the southern part of my continent for like 80 turns, as a horde of quadtriremes prevented me from actually destroying it, quite frustrating!

Haven't played civ for a couple months, decided to come back for this one. Fun game, the start was pretty harsh, but mostly because I hadn't noticed the map type :) After settling the western isles, and snatching 3 cities off of Korea in a war, I got up to a cosy dozen of cities and sluggishly skipped turns untill victory. A cool map, I opted for Work Ethic along with Tundra Folklore to get some kickstart at the beggining, worked up pretty nicely (additional ~58 production in the tundra cities).
Thanks for the save:)

Science Victory T277, 1645 points, 54 h

Achievements obtained through this play:
  • Robber Baron: Control 5 Luxury Resource Monopolies at once on a Standard sized map or larger.
This game turned specially difficult with so much desert in the first settling crown. Plus then Hammurabi became a hard nut to crack. I had small science for most of the game due to lack of good campus placement and having to fight for the north against Korea. Had I known there was much better land to the west and north island, I would have invested instead into early navigation techs to settle those islands instead of working hard to make the desert habitable (Petra, Lady of the Reeds and Marshes, Preserves, Lighthouses, etc.)

Hammurabi was having oil by the time I was building iron mines. He was also getting most great persons. I brought war to him bringing every other civ with me even with much worse weapons out of fear he will have a Science Victory. There was a lot of battles in the sea, and by T250 I signed peace with him, basically because the game was taking forever to play and I needed to finish the game today. Fortunately the peace left him in bankruptcy and he could not support his other wars. In the end his civilization collapsed when he entered a Dark Age, I guess the war lagged him hard, and his northern conquered cities started to turn away to the original founders.

By the end of the game I had 29 cities, two were conquered to Korea, one was conquered from a free city no one was able to turn in the middle of the ocean, and three were turned due to loyalty from Korea. The rest, 23, were self-founded, helped with Ancestral Hall, a Monumentality Renaissance Age and a lot of gold from diplomacy and harbors.

Washington became a production beast thanks to the many mines, a large population and 20+ trade routes coming from the large empire. It was launching Lagrange Stations in one turn. All that despite the many calamities in the form of droughts and hurricanes. In the end I decided to go safe and place there Liang to protect against environment and a couple of Spies against sabotage, but I could have gone better with Pingala. I used Ik-kil for a secondary Spaceport but it only had time to build a single Terrestrial Station. I could have made a better time if I had used the 5% per suzerain card and the 15% to space projects earlier (I had them but forgot to use them in my rush to finish).

20210805051446_1.jpg

I enjoyed the Corporations game and I lost the science focus often just to obtain more monopolies and maintain luxuries against climate change.

SV @ T232

Finished this game after the deadline due to summer holidays . It was a very interesting game, with me on the back foot (at least when compared to Scotland and Korea) for over 100 turns (e.g. T060 - We are at 15 Science, Scotland are at 46, Korea are at 45). The gist of the game was to develop an island empire, build a couple of spaceports and do a final pillaging campaign on Scotland and Korea.

- What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?
Game went mostly according to plan; the start was extremely slow by my usual standards, and the competition (Korea & Scotland) were very tough; they could have taken me out if they would have been more warlike...

- How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
I used diplo favor for trading, the extra wildcard slots were also very useful. The +5 CS on the home continent also helped during the pillage wars.

- Where did you settle your capital city? Why? Your second city? Why?
Settled 1SE on the river, to be closer to starting resource-rich tiles. Had 2 spaceports, 1 in the capital and a second one in a water city powered by Auckland and the Mausoleum at Los Angeles (Halicarnassus :)).

- Early order for technology/civics? What did you prioritize for technology/civics?
Nothing fancy, went for some "early" Campuses, but the start was very slow due to bad adjacency bonuses...

- What was your early build order in your capital and other early cities? Military units / Civilian units / Districts & city development / Wonders / Civ Unique Unit & Infrastructure? Most critical or interesting?
Was 100% peaceful in the beginning, as my neighbors were extremely strong scientifically. Managed to snag Kilwa, lost Oxford to Scotland but managed a late Mausoleum at Halicarnassus in the second spaceport city.

- What City-States did you meet and which ones did you nurture to your side?
Searched for the scientific CS obviously. After securing Kilwa, suzerained both scientific and both industrial CS - very good for a scientific victory!

- When did you have Dark/Golden ages?

I had dark classical age followed by one Golden Age later one, but neither proved to be of much consequence, as I was still far away from my neighbours.

- How did the game modes affect or impact your play?

I established Industries wherever I could but kind of forgot about Products later on

- How were the Barbarians?
Not noteworthy. On higher levels, the AIs are much more active and can keep barbs under control. I usually face many more barbs on Prince & King levels.

- Any surprises/frustration/elations?

It was an interesting game, as I was behind in science for a long time, was not actually sure that I would win for the first ~70 turns, which is a lot longer than usual :crazyeye:.

Thank you for the game 6otM team!
