Domination, Turn 181

Very interesting layout this game. Appreciated Giant's Causeway for the early culture. Did not appreciate Tamar trying to invade me at the beginning. She apologized with a badly-settled canal city I got to inherit. Tamar being on the other side of the mountains was a pain so I put off conquering her until near the end. Dido barely outlasted her due to having an inland sea capital which the AI thought needed a naval force.

The naval barb clans stayed annoying the whole game, though especially at the beginning. That Giant's Causeway city never got to do much after the early game due to constant harassment. That's what I get for trying to raise barb clans into city-states--not like the map didn't have plenty of city-states to focus on. Not much of a fight over them, so I never lost any levied troops.

Other than that, berserkers did a ton of work (especially since niter didn't pile up very fast), the naval unit policy card did a ton of work, AI didn't invest much in walls, and I managed golden ages in medieval and renaissance. Varangian Harald is always a good time.

T164 Domination Victory

Took a little longer than necessary due to having to let friendships run out – one of which was an accident (Portugal) – sat around his cap for 15 turns waiting for it to expire. Settled a city on south side of Dido lake and rushed a canal to get some boats in to clear the waters for a quick take of her cap. Used purchased bombers to wipe Georgia’s walls and walk in – kept her till last due to annoying walls and mountains – blocked her behind and ignored her most of the game.

Early game was chop Apadana in cap, then Oracle, and followed by as many wonders as possible to keep the envoys coming – Hattusa was amazing for all the strategics I didn’t have, especially early iron – fought a few times for suz of that one and ended up with fully promoted Amani to seal it. Timed Berserkers with England attack, Dido military alliance and Oligarchy to help – caught her just as she started to accelerate with IZ’s going, luckily no walls in half the cities. Swept over to Indonesia and across to Byzantium – then split armies to Netherlands and Dido/Portugal to hit as timers ran out. Luxuries and pillaging helped fund the advances – got hard to track CS levies, had at least 8-10 going at a time. Cahokia mounds everywhere for the amenities – All Golden Ages – Monumentality all.

Religion was Religious Settlements pantheon – then Culture from buildings, science from followers, and zeal for speedy movement. Fez spawned and I used religious units to convert conquered cities and CS to get extra science.

Special mechanic of levied troops killing units was ok – better early but it did add up.

Thanks for another interesting game that makes me play differently in fun ways.

An amazing seed. The map was stretching the player in all directions, highly rewarding having both naval and ground army, money, envoys and scouting. I can see that GaidinX justified getting a wonder-game, which is really cool considering the domination victory!

I managed to get an extremely lucky start: my first village got me a free scout (which I guess wasn't that good on this map, but saved me from wasting production on it in capital), and my second village was a relic. That gave me religious settlements, which in itself probably accelerated my victory by 15 turns or so. Finally some good RNG :)

When I scouted Georgia and noticed the mountain range, I immedietely strayed away from the initial idea of quickly levying warriors and rushing the nearest neighbour, and instead opted for a lot of scouting, in order to find an easier target. The name of the game was completing as many CS quests as possible, and levying their units.

After finding a bunch of civs and CSs, I set my eyes for Portugal, which was an easy conquest since they built most of their cities by the coast. After that, a miracle happened, and one of the naval-ladies (I am seriously hopeless in distinguishing them) offered me 20 Iron for a bunch of luxuries. Having Iron, I rushed Berserkers, making them my new win condition. The 20 Iron allowed me to get two Berserkers, which stomped Netherlands, where I found more Iron.

Afterwards it was a mattter of coordinating two land armies of Berserkers with Battering Rams, and two naval fleets of Quaderimes and Galleys (ultimately Frigates and Caravels), to capture the remaining capitals. Turns out Berserkers can get insanely strong, they had up to 78 strength when attacking with a GG next to them.

Very fun game! Thanks for the save

Dom Vic, turn 166.

Feel like I really missed the boat on the last one so was hoping to do better this time.

But wow, Gaidin X's game is completely different (and way more advanced) than mine. I was barely scraping to 100 science, built no Wonders at all, never built a single campus (captured a few), and relied on Grandmaster's Chapel at the end for quickly bringing in strong units. I think I only suzed 4 or 5 city states the entire game.

Started out levying Ayuthayya against Georgia, but she quickly threw up walls. But I was able to pillage a lot and raze one city, which blunted her growth. Then almost took Indonesia with galleys, but she also threw up walls at the last second. Luckily I had captured another city and was able to purchase catapults to finish the job. This was a recurring theme- everyone besides Victoria and Dido had walls so had to first conquer a secondary city, then purchase either battering rams/siege towers or catapults/trebuchets. It was a spread-out, challenging map with a lot of inland capitals and annoying mountain ranges- so a great game!

Thanks for the game!

T161 on my second go. Started over after I remembered galleys could be purchased from barb clans. Duh.

Just wanted to second Chrumo's praise of the map seed. Emporer dom on a water map is not difficult to win, but this map slowed me down quite a bit.

Thanks for the game - I enjoyed dom VC, which is rare.

Culture victory, T368, score: 3632

- What was your plan for achieving the VC? What are the major steps you planned to take? What events, if any, changed the plan in execution and to what new plan? Any interesting decision points?
Well, there was no master plan, I tried to ensure money and production capacities in all the cities and try to defend against my quite agressive neighbors - Tamar and Gitarja were not kind to me at all, so they had to fall.
- What were your initial 5-10 builds in the capital or other early cities?
I focused on harbors, religion first and production and science in the second half of the game.
- How did the leader bonus and civ unique ability impact your plan/play, if at all?
Well, the ocean tile navigation (first circumnavigation of the Earth in 200 BC) and the healing anywhere helped a lot in the exploration and fighting. I liked it a lot. Many times I had not enough money to levy CS units, but the few times I managed to rely on CS units, it was amazing, how cheap and effective it was. This was my second time leading with HH(v), so I think this leader needs more respect, especially when there are a lot of CS in the area.
- How many cities did you settle and/or capture? Where did you settle your first few cities?
14 cities founded, 32 cities captured (including 5 capitals) before the win. The first few cities were relatively close and after 5 or 6 I started to settle all over the globe, tried to be close to my future enemies.
- Pantheon chosen and why? Religious beliefs chosen, and why?
Pantheon: Religious Settlements (for the free settler, and for the higher expansion rate)
Beliefs: Work Ethic (for production), Tithe (for money) and then Religious Colonization (as I was quite agressive in spreading my faith, so when my enemies settled a new city, it started to send me money), and Gurdwara (for the +2 food and +1 housing)
- What governments did you select? What key policy cards did you use? Why?
Most of the time I was in Theocracy, I like to by cheap with faith, especially after the Grandmaster's Chapel was completed, so I could by land units with faith. The policy cards were for money and production, mostly.
- Which Governors were most important; when and why?
Moksa was my favourite, as I had many religious quarrels, and he also enabled me to by districts with faith. He moved around my cities a lot.
- Was diplomacy/trading useful? How? Relations with other civs?
Relations with others were mostly war :) - I did not like them and they did not like me either. HOwever converting enemy cities to my faith gave me a lot of era points, especiall after Taj Mahal was completed.
- When did you have Dark/Golden ages?
Classical: Turn 57 (1760 BC) - normal
Medieval: Turn 98 (450 BC) - normal
Renaissance: Turn 138 (540 AD) - golden
Industrial: Turn 180 (1190 AD) - dark
Modern: Turn 240 (1645 AD) - HEROIC
Atomic: Turn 295 (1848 AD) - golden
Information: Turn 335 (1914 AD) - golden
- How did the game modes affect or impact your play?
I love corporations so that was familiar to me and also the popping up of CS is to my taste. Especiall with HH(v) it can be a really great benefit. Sadly I was not prepared well enough (with money) to exploit it fully, maybe next time...
- Any surprises/frustration/elations you ran into, how did you deal with it?
Dido became quite strong with subs, I had to use a few nukes to keep them under control.
- Did you enjoy your game?
Yes, a lot. Thank you for creating it. I might restart, and play again from the beginning.

Being a nuclear superpower, I could've finished the game earlier, with domination, but I like Civ a lot, and it was fun playing with a lot of cities and conquering civilisations.

The save is the last turn before the culture victory. Be careful with asking for the next turn, it might affect your personal stats!

Domination Victory, T130, Score 824, 11 h

Very casual play, I enjoyed myself. It was so easy to leavy city states that it felt cheese, and the extra culture and science helped me escape very soon. Added to clans recruitment of units, with two early horsemen, secured a victory without having to work that hard really.

Second city went to the Giant's Causeway wonder, my early units picked the Spear advancement, and the city boosted Sailing and produced the early galleys. Third city went to control the continent strait so I could easily cross naval units from side to side.

Early game
20230910224706_1.jpg

War order
First army (built and levied units in initial continent): Tamar > Dido > Joao > Victoria
Second army (levied units and numerous galleys): Gitarja > Theodora > Victoria
Third army (levied Mohenjo-Daro + 2 initial galleys): Wilhelmina

The ability to freely embark and disembark offered a lightning city ambush experience. Aside from levying armies, it was the most relevant feature.
