The guys are too young, too inexperienced to create a truly great classic and it's a shame Firaxis haven't given them the guidance of an Ed Beech right from the get-go.

Sometimes you need a new fresh look of someone young and imaginative to push stalled gormila forward. So far I'm pretty excited about what I knowe a bout BE so far and chances are IMO it'll be really good game. Will it become classic? I'm relatively new to the series (playing since IV) but I'd say that Civilization as a whole is classic and I expect no less from BE. If they won't break it it'll be great! And get even better after expansion(s), I believe.
