What's everyone's worst experience with anarchy? Playing as the Sumerians on Demigod, I just got 9 turns of anarchy [pissed] when going from despotism to monarchy. And here I was thinking 7 was the limit.

OMFG that's almost half a golden age. Makes you really think about changing govts....

I've gotten 9-turn ones before, but the worst was an 8-turn one in my Sid game.

Check out Help a Loser Out, post #249 in my succession game links where I express my indignation at seeing a 9-turn anarchy.  :gripe:

I've gotten 9 turn anarchies often enough. Bad luck if it happens when you go to Republic. And it cannot be avoided in RaR, or variants. Or when you know you will be fighting until the game is over, so you want Communism.
But, it can be easily avoided in any other case - Why would you ever want to revolt a second time, unprepared?

I have a solution but its plain down and dirty
if i recall the turns of anarachy depend for a deal on how much cities you have,
so: give all your cities to an Ai player and recapture then aftert you hitted the revolution button.
It works!

all the culture improvement will be gone this way!
but if you're focusing on military, this may be a good way. will try in a non-gotm game first. :goodjob:

Most of my games I have 5-6 turns of anarchy, except
the one below, which I still good remember, not because
of the 9 turns of anarchy, but because of a very funny
culture flip.
A chinese city flipped to my civ, turns later the citizens
decided to go back and join China. After more turns the
people of the same city had enough of Mao and joined
again the Mayans.

In the current game I'm playing, I went to switch to republic and had a 9 turn anarchy.

I've heard it tends to be longer or shorter depending on how large the gap between governments (Desp to Mon typically shorter than Desp to Dem) and depending on the size of your empire. Do you confirm this?
Unless religious, I always try to have only one change in a game (typically Desp to Rep) and to have it as soon as possible, so I generally get a typical 4 or 5 turn anarchy.

surely a period of anarchy is the longest measurable unit of time ever. a few turns seem to stretch on for hours and you can feel the AI churning out its units and progressing through the tech tree for your detriment.
Surely not another turn of anarchy you think to yourself?!? and then you realise its only be one turn since you overthrew your last government.

Of course you all are aware of the well-known and often-posted method:

If you research a government tech yourself, go to F1 screen via "big picture". Revolt. See how many turns of anarchy you got. In playing your turn, you may revolt again. :)

I usually do it if I have more than 5 turns of anarchy in the 1st try.
