Hi Civ fans

Some days ago i brought this awesome game :) It got me and i've been playing almost nonstop the last days. But i ran into some questions i can't fix:

1) Can't I pick several units at once? Instead of sending my army to the same spot one unit at a time, cant i just pick them all at once??

2) Is there any place where i can read about different strategies or something? I almost finished my second save but I almost the same thing in the two saves. It isn't fun over time :)

3) The game lags a lot on my Mac.. I know it isn't the best computer but cant i do something?? I've set the graphics options to minimum.. My Mac Specs:

Thank you a lot :)

Welcome! I'm also pretty new, but to the forum rather than the game, so I'll have a stab at answering your questions.

1) Sadly not. Being able to move units in concert with one another is a much-requested feature.
2) Here! This forum is a great repository for strategy chat. Otherwise, try some of the Let's Play videos on YouTube - particularly MadDjinn's.
3) The game can slow even the best computer to a grind even on modest settings towards the end of a game. Smaller maps and fewer competitors help.

Can't help you on the Mac question. As to your others, no, there's no way to select multiple units. Tied up in the 1 unit per tile mechanic, but there you are.

On strategies, all I can recommend is to prowl these forums for good ideas. The War Academy articles are in the process of being updated for God's & Kings (the Rome update is out), but the articles for the vanilla game are still quite helpful. The massive thread outlining Tradition's 4 Cities Opener is quite useful, especially where folks disagree about this or that approach (I think you learn more from listening in on disagreements than from reading a cookbook). There are also numerous threads on science victory strategies, culture victories, warmonger strategies, etc.

You can also watch LPs; the best are those (like MadDjinn's) where they provide expert commentary (explaining "why", not just "how"). Some lack audio commentary, but can still be instructive if you pay close attention.

I take it you've turned on "quick combat" and so on? That's about all you can do with that machine unfortunately.

Not sure about that "Mac" did you upgrade your graphics drivers directly from the main site? If not then you can try that.

Watch Lp's that are closer to your own speed(level 4-6) as the one's with high end level play(7-8) can be a complete waste of time for you since there's lots of things pointed out in the videos which will not need to be done until you begin going up levels to Immortal and above. Of course those videos are still fun to watch just for the occasional awesome idea.

Good luck!

Your MacBook's graphics and CPU are both under the minimum for playing the game. All you can do is play small(er) maps, with fewer AIs. You could also switch to strategic view.

I have 4 year old iMac with just 2GB RAM. I've turned all the graphics settings to their minimum, and tend to play standard map sizes with no more than 6 Civ's (including my own). If I play on a larger map I reduce the Civ's to 4, which can be fun, but you have fewer people to sell your wares to

Have a look in the Mac section of the forum for any other info.

Well, if you're getting bored, there are some fun but goofy strategies you can try...

Play as the Aztecs and go for a cultural war victory

Play as the polynesians on a 'terra' map and embark your first settler for the new world rather than sticking around with everyone else.

Hoard great scientists and 1 great engineer as the babylonians, wait for the perfect moment and discover techs up to nuclear missiles, hurry the manhattan project with the engineer then buy a whole bunch of atomic bombs. I love doing this in multiplayer games with my friends and sending in an army of cannons and musketeers supported by nuclear barrages.

Play as Maya or Arabia and make a bajillion tiny cities held together by a happiness religion and see if you can occupy whole continents with it.

Play as Egypt, go tradition, build a couple of really productive cities and get the wonder building pantheon and try to get all or nearly all the wonders possible.

There are tons of ways to play if you're willing to get goofy with it.

Thanks to all for the response!! but i got some extra questions:

- What is "goofy" strategies??

- In my american save i just annexed the German capital. Sadly i cant produce any production?? My civilians are on the tiles with production, but i can only produce food?? Why?

Look for a little red fist icon underneath the name of the city. Cities are "in revolt" after they are captured. If you hover the mouse over the red fist icon, it will tell you how many turns that city will be in revolt. Once the rebellion is stamped out, the city will start producing again. It's usually somewhere between 3 and 14 turns.

Ahh thanks you! You were right :)

I was wondering what the different expansions do? Im dane and thought it would be fun playing as Harold Bluetooth. And what about the expansion pack "Kings and God" what is it? is it worth the money? :)

Harold is fun to play, particularly with the new pillage-heal mechanic. The 1066 scenario is fun as well.

Golds & Kings is, IMO, a must-have. I cannot aimagine playing vanilla again. There are several threads discussing G&K (two recent ones are here and here), so check them out

Thanks for the respons! Hopefully i got my final question here:

I've been looking on the different ways to win. I've decided the scientific way. All i dont know is how to create the Apollo Program?? I know i need to build different parts of the program and assemble them - but how? Are they just like building buildings? How do i assemble them?

Any other good advices for this kind of victory?

Thanks alot! :)

The Apollo Program is a project. You research it like you do the Manhattan Project. After you research it you can build the 6 parts needed for a spaceship. Launching the spaceship; automatic when completed, will give you a science win.

I thought I read they at least fixed it so units would be selected in order of where they were on the map if you use auto select next unit so that would help a little with moving nearby units together.

What I wish they had was an escort function, so a battle unit would always stay on top of a civilian unit that you had on an autopath.

I usually like to do strategies that enhance the strengths of the civ like Aztecs on a lakes map or Polynesians on an archipelago map. Some of the achievements make you do weird stuff. The longest name ever achievement makes you build over 30 cities.

I would upgrade the RAM if that is possible. I don't know how it is on Mac, but just Civ can push 2GB of RAM on my PC laptop far enough into a game sometimes, and that's on top of the OS and other running apps.
