A couple questions

1. Why can't I create railroads the same way I create roads? Why do I have to create them one at a time.

2. Sometimes I get a message that says my trade route is broken. But when I check the road/railroad appears in tact? What's causing the problem?

I dont know why the rail road does that but is it a pronblem and its either because a barbarian unit is on it or enemy. if its a harbour then if an enemy is nearby then the trade will stop

If you use the "route to" option, it lays railroads (at least, it did the last time I checked).

Does your route go through an other player's/AI's land and you don't have an open borders with them?

I've had the same problem as the OP regarding broken trade routes. It happens even late in the game as well and I can't fathom why- the cities still show that they are connected to a trade network.
