A few newbie Pitboss questions

All,

Can someone help me with the Pitboss program?

1) Do I need to have Civ4 running while the Pitboss program is running?
If so, what is the proper way to set it all up (ie start which program first,
anything special I have to do in Civ4, etc?)

2) What port do I need to open on my router? UDP and IP?

3) For my first game, should I make the game simultaneous or not? If simultaneous, how does the game handle 2 people building a city right next to each other? Who gets the build?

4) Can I still play solo Civ4 while Pitboss is running?

Thx

Hi. I have never hosted a MP game with pitboss, but here is what I have heard from others in the forums:
1. No. Pitboss can run solo.
2. Port 2056.
3. The theory I have read is that the first person to issue the command in the simultaneous turn will get the build when the turn ends. The theory goes that this holds true for research, wonder builds, etc.
4. Don't know.

If you get a multiplayer game going, I would love to join.

Thanks.

Yes , but you really need a good PC

So, I can just leave the pitboss program up and running and it will take the moves and process them w/o having the civ4 program running?

Thx

yes, that's the way it works. Also, I don't have an extraordinary PC by any stretch of the imagination and I can still host a PTBS game and play single player without a problem.

I'm sure this question has been answered elsewhere, but I just don't really feel like searching all over the place right at this moment.
I'd like to test out some things with Pitboss as I've never run one myself, though I've played in a handful.

Can I install Pitboss on a Win98 machine without Civ4 being there at all (since Civ4 can't be installed on Win98)?

Pitboss needs the Civ4 installed files , not all of them ... sound and art can be delete to save place .. .but the rest should be there as the PitBoss controls the AI and thus needs the files.

Yes, unless for some reason you wanted to restrict the times in which people could play turns (I can't think of any reason, though).
