A Full Earth Map, With Areas "Resized" To Maximize Game Play

:) not abandoned or forgotten. Simply delayed by some relatively minor but prolonged health issues. A recent adjustment in medication seems to have helped a lot, and hopefully i'll be back actively working on this early in January.

Blue Monkey, having dealt with health issues and medications changes for 45 plus years, your first priority is your health. everything else can be put on hold, your health cannot be. When you are sure you are up to it, go back to work on the map, as that is also needed therapy for you. Take care, you will be in my prayers.

I would agree 100%. I would love to see the finished product, but only if it can be done safely.

I'm currently experiencing "difficulties" with the external drive where all my graphics work is stored. Hopefully it turns out to be a minor problem which will be fixed soon. If not I do have means to rescue files, but that of course is a longer & more tedious process.

Hope it is a minor problem... not desirable to start the new year with another tedious problem.

After trying a few different ways, it's clear it's one of those hardware disasters that requires clean-room recovery. Despite losing a lot of valuable stuff - most important being all my C3 mod work (past & present) along with entire mp3 music library - that is well beyond my means. So I'll be starting from scratch for this map and whatever lies beyond. It's definitely on my to do list, and fortunately I figured out some things that will streamline the pipeline. But in terms of time it's quite a setback.

 I can relate ... But anyone who's been here for any significant length of time is familiar with your perseverance :worship:

Good luck Blue Monkey! Many years ago my pc cought fire and was destroyed. Fortunately I had a good back up of my work at that time.

... "Caught fire?" - I mean, we all know how "heavy duty" modder you are, but, still! ;)

I have experienced and totally understand the situation... Setback, Yes indeed and Very Frustrating!

The only thing that helps me with such losses is to make the new work better than before. That and I now back up all work on an external Hard Drive.

I am certain you know more now than when you started the Map.
...sorry for your losses.

Losing all the files for this project might possibly have been a blessing in disguise. Was casually browsing through some of the newer incarnations of Civ & saw this map. I was curious what projection it was based on. It's "cordiform".

So I looked at some geophysical earth maps and I think that this projection just might be the solution.

South America, Africa & the other areas of major down-scaling can be done without requiring much distortion at all of adjacent areas we want to keep normal-size or enlarge.

The Pacific can still function as it should from a gameplay point of view - distance traveled - without a needlessly large number of ocean tiles. This is actually a big plus since by eliminating so many ocean tiles the dreaded between-turn bogdown is reduced by quite a bit.

With this type of projection no wrap-around is needed at all.

I haven't resized anything in this image, the red border gives a very rough approximation of the shape a biq would be. I painted blue across S. America & Africa as a visual stand-in for the narrow sea passages there would be for the Capes.

Excellent...This will indeed be Better and the Best way to handle the Full Earth Map for Game Play

A big part of such a map is yet existing with Anthony Boscia´s scenario 1989. The map size is 361x214 and it stretches in Asia up to Novosibirsk:

Thanks for mentioning Anthony's map. I am downloading it. I am looking forward to what Blue Monkey comes up with. I love new maps.
