Whenever you approach an enemy city, take hide in the mountains. Your unit gets a 100% defensive bonus up there and thats very good if you get surprised and attacked!

It works pretty much anywhere on the map. When you see trouble coming your way - nip up into the mountains and let them attack you first.

The main exception to this rule appears to be if your name happens to be Osama Bin Laden. Then it can sometimes backfire on you.

LOL Polonius.

It works as long as they attack me. Ticks me off when I stick my defender on the mountain to absorb the attack, and then they just walk past me and capture my worker.

Same thing happened to me, I must be the biggest moron in the world. I got a barbarian uprising near my newest city which only had a spearman. I knew where they were coming from, and luckily there was a peninsula with a mountain overlooking it, so I got the bright idea of putting my spearman on the mountain. I watched in horror as 15+ horsemen rushed right past him.

Same for me.
I had a barbarian Horseman 2 tiles away and right in front of him one of my workers working in the mountains. So I pulled out of the City with a single Spearman, the sole Defender the City had, expecting the Horseman would attack him. But no, what did the Barbarian do? He went into the single Tundra-Tile that was between him and the city, conquered the city (I hadn´t thought about, that Tundra-Tiles cost only one MP), conquered the city and stole all the 70 turn worth of Production, my City already had collected to build the great Library :(

Damned intelligent Barbarians
Next time I know better.

Yeah the AI is much better in civ3 at not wasting units attacking well fortified positions outside of cities. Big improvement.

The ai IS a pushover for workers. Keep a few exposed ones around your offensive units. Instead of taking advantage of the weak defensive stats of your calvary/tanks they'll often waste movement pts going after the workers, leaving themselves exposed. Next turn you'll have the stats advantage and can attack successfully. Of course this works better on terrain where they don't have any movement bonuses, or inside your borders.
