Thoughts on civ7 combat and commanders

Playing Trung Trac as Persia is quite fun. The Persian unique commander begins with Initiative in the Assault tree, so if you put all three of your free promotions into the Assault tree you can get your first commendation right off the bat.

With this in mind, I set up the game with the mementos that give you science and culture for each commander promotion, but I found the yields marginal after the first quarter of antiquity.

I do use reinforce. Often, my best production cities, or even whatever city I'm building units in isn't near the front line.

Especially the first few ballista, they usually get produced in the Capital but the war will be 15+ tiles away from the Cap.

Yeah, basing anything on numbers of Commander Promotions almost requires you to be in near-constant combat to get the most out of them, and that produces its own problems very quickly - even if you are winning.

I think it's very interesting that we have such different styles with commanders. Every single commander I have takes initiative and then manueverability. Initiative is hands down the best option, if you're willing to pack and unpack your units during war, paying closer attention to movement points.

I have read people say that this is an exploit, but I really don't think it is. I think it is intentional to simulate a great commander using tactics in the field.

Manueverability is amazing. It is usually the only point I take in the tree, but your commanders get so much faster with it.

Yeah with initiative and maneuverability, you can move a big distance right up to the enemy, unpack and attack with all your units in a single attack. It is amazing as a first strike. Yeah, it is a bit OP but like you said, it simulates a great commander using tactics so I think it is ok. That is kind of the whole point of commanders.

To quote a few Great Generals/Commanders on the subject of striking first and hard:

Timur-i-Lenk (Tamerlane):
"It is better to be on hand with ten men than absent with ten thousand"

Nathan Bedford Forrest:
"I get there first with the most men"

Aleksandr Suvorov:
"Attack! That's my reconnaissance."

U. S. Grant:
"Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving - "
