a good way to cheat for high final scores (or just to survive in the top two difficulty levels) is to "hut cheat". choose a custom game and then save just before moving into a village hut, reloading until you get what you want.

for the first three or four huts, i keep reloading until i get a scout (more scouts early means more huts that get utilized). after that, i go for technologies or massive amounts of gold (80 plus per hut).

this is not very fair to the ai civs, but it means i'm guaranteed, at noble or lower levels, to utterly dominate the world, which i enjoy.

To each their own.

As time has gone on, I take more pride in reloading less and less often in my offline games, in playing with whatever cards I'm dealt. But that's me.

rule #1, play however it's fun for you. sometimes i'm in an "i just want silly fun" mood so i make everything very easy and it makes me giggle.

Yep, starting with fusion in 4000 BC makes the game a lot easier ;)

ever try playing the Firaxian faction in SMAX? that was fun *giggle*.

 only in the offline ones? or this means you never did reload in the online ones? ;) as for me, i like laughing at the cards you're dealt in the online games sometimes, does it show?

When I'm in that mood, I play as Augustus.

That is a secret I will take to my grave. ;)

this exploit takes too long to actually be worth it. there ar far more exploits that are actually on the path to glory that dont involve redundant reloading

There are many more fun and "evil" ways to cheat, e.g.

Animal farm trick: Ctrl+W at the beginning, then add 10 bears and 20 panthers near each of your opponents.

Barbarian trick: Turn on the raging barbarians, huge pangnea map, humid weather to create more jungles, then Ctrl+W, add the Great Wall to your capital. Occasionally open the world builder to enjoy the sight of your enemies' suffering.

"Rambo" compaign: On a pangnea map, give yourself 6 Combat IV Medic II Guerilla II Woodman II Commando Blitz axemen (= Rambo) at the very beginning, simultaneously declare war on all AIs and send 1 Rambo to each of the AI's land. Just pillage and kill and don't take any city.

Middle East retribution trick: You play Saladin, pick an AI leader from America, England and Japan, respectively, then delete all the oil tiles in the whole world except the one in your cultural border.

:rotfl:

I have just got to try that Rambo thing sometime.

well... in reply to all the comments, i have just this to say. i just posted a score of over 30,000 playing gandhi on warlord level using my cheat. i didn't have to use the worldbuilder; only make sure that i get what i want from each and every "goodie hut". by 1 a.d., i have a massive empire, all the world wonders available to that point (which is a lot, cuz i "hut cheated" all the possible technologies), etc. however, even raising the level one notch, to noble level, makes this cheat much less impressive. without the ability to force the ai to give me five or six settlers and ditto workers (which i force before the techs on warlord level), it's hard to hit fifty cities, build all the world wonders, etc. by the way, i won the game in the year 1800 (exactly to the year) with a diplomatic victory, with my civ having enough united nations clout to vote me in for said victory on my own.

winning on warlord feels like stealing candy from a kid to many. Though if your a smaller kid that might be hard enough i guess.

30K is not worth so much effort
I get this score by playing for cultural, without any kind of reload.
Now, try to get the 1.000.000 scores you can see in the HoF.
I don't mind if you reload for it ;)

What a stupid thread.

Smokey, you honestly reload everytime a hut pop goes against you, there are no words to express how lame that makes you.

Two options:

1. Enter the World Builder and just give yourself the extra scouts.

2. Enter the World Builder and add a gajillion extra huts that only you can reach.

Both are as effective and don't require the constant reloading.

I find it difficult to be impressed by high scores from cheating.

You guys are actually the losers, calling him a loser for doing what he does for fun.

If you really take this game that seriously YOU ARE THE LOSERS!

I never reload for misfortune or ineptitude any more. Admittedly, when I first started playing Civ IV, I did for poor long term strategy, and I think it helped me refine my play fairly quickly. Now, though, it would just encourage sloppy play and even cheating. Not reloading has certainly taught me to be more careful about escorting early settlers :)

The only occasional time I reload now is when I am not sure of a game mechanic, so it's not really a play mistake or bad luck. For example, one time I wasn't sure if you'd keep the food if you grew the same turn as a granary, so I tested it out, found it didn't, and reloaded. Obviously this can only happen a limited number of times though.
