A question about technology brokering

In the game, technology brokering's explanation says "Players cannot trade technology they have not researched themselves". But I cannot understand this sentence.

On the one hand, of course you cannot give someone a technology if you haven't researched it yourself. Its obvious.
On the other hand, if you had researched a technology, why would you need to get it from another civ?

It may sound really stupid, but thats what I understand.

Oh, I think your confused by the semantics of that phrase. It means you cannot trade technology you gained without researching it. Normally if you research Astronomy, for example, you could trade it to Monty and Liz, and next turn they could trade it to the civs you haven't met yet or to the civs you don't want to get Astronomy. With No-tech Brokering switched "on" Monty and Liz cannot pass on what they got from you... Makes sense? :)

lol of course... that makes sense :)
Actually, that discussion is what made me ask this question in the first place.
But only to be sure, does it mean that if I gain a technology from another civ, I can't give it to anyone?

Thanks

Correct, checking the no brokering option means you can't.
Also I think it includes technologies from huts, can't trade those.
I'm not sure about a tech from the Oracle or similar ways.

Apparently tech gained from goody huts cannot be traded either when "no-tech brokering" is activated. However I have not observed that particular situation yet.

I haven't seen for sure if techs gained via "light bulb", "free" techs, and techs gained by stealing (a spy action) are also prohibitted from being traded with this option. I think for consistancy it would make sense if it did.

If so then, for the sake of further understanding of this option, the only technology that is tradable with broking blocked is technology that was specifically researched by the primary offering civ in question - this works both ways too: if Pacal researches Monothesim and gives it to me for a tech I researched, then if I talk to Joao or Charlemagne later on I cannot offer Monotheism to them, nor can I offer Sailing to them (or Pacal for that matter) if I got it from a goody hut (for example).

I have to remember to observe how this option works out in my games...

PS: hmm, post 300 for me!

Another question I had regarding this is related to colonies: When created they know all f the tech that their "parent" knows - can they trade it? They were (ostensibly) part of the culture that researched it? or are they considered to have been "gifted"the tech by their parents?
