I was reading through some CTP2 reviews, and came across one by GamePen - this reviewer thinks CTP2 is awful and cites it with comparisons to what he thinks civ3 will be:

Someday in the future, probably sometime in 2002, Civilization III will come out, and hopefully, it will end this tiresome string of Civilization-type games that have been foisted on the strategy gamer. It will use Alpha Centauri as the basis -- the model of how a Civ-type game should be made -- without the murky, depressing graphics and unfamiliar technology and terminology that confused many gamers, like Nerve Staples and Ethical Calculus. It will use SMAC's modular units and governments, and the advanced diplomacy.

Hmmm, interesting... I have civ3 and I don't see any modular units, or any modular governments for that matter. Actually I see very simplistic units, and dumbed-down cartoony governments. I haven't played SMAC, so I'm not sure about whether it used it as its basis, but from other posts on this forum I will assume that it wasn't.

Maybe the "whiners" on this forum weren't the only people who expected more from Civ3?

It's about now that Zouave comes in and, to everyone's astonishment, defends Civ3, thereby creating a new Wonder of the World!

 :)

Not to say that I don't still enjoy Civ 3, but I was very disapointed in it after playing SMAC. Never played Civ 2 so I can't comment about it compared to Civ3.

PS is a closed format....meaning that the programmers know exactly what hardware they are programming for. PCs are an open format. meaning that there are 1000s if not millions of different ways a computer can be setup when you include all the components. A PS game should never crash. I have seen them do this b/c the PS had heat problems.

I've never had Civ3 crash with standard rules. It crashed a few times when I tried using a SaveGame Editor and when i tried increasing the bomber range to more than 8.

I also expected more from Civ3, but I am quite happy with what I got. IMO it's a lot more fun to play than Civ2, and soon after getting Civ3, I really became addicted to it. However my greatest disappointment was the lack of a scenario editor in Civ3, but hopefully this should be fixed in PTW, which I greatly look forward to obtaining.
