A Thought on UU's

Do you think it would be more realistic if each Civ had a Unique Unit per time period?

Example: Japan could have the Samurai from a certain time period (i.e. Classical, Modern, etc.) until they reach the Modern age, when their UU could become a Zero Fighter, etc.

I really like the idea, for example ancient UU for China would be Cho Ko Nu, rocketeer or Junk (upgraded version of Caravel), industrious UU would be PLA.

But like the above example, there is no such thing as modern or even industrious Aztec UU or classical, ancient and medieval American UU.

The original idea behind UUs is that it allows a civilization to specialise in a certain way (eg Indian Fast Worker) or be especially powerful during a certain period in game, generally corresponding roughly to the period that civ was most powerful in real history. Having a UU for each period of history, while that would make the game somewhat more interesting, sort of spoil the game mechanism.

No it wouldn't work. What would Rome have? (And don't you dare say anything about Italy!) But if you do, what about the Byzantines, what would they have. It would be a terrib;e to just not include them.

The History in the Making Mod uses two UUs for each civ. I love it.

Another idea might be a combination. For example England would have a redcoat as it's first UU as is. Then in addition if you played as Lizzie you would get a Seadog, as Vickki you would get a Dreadnaught, and as Churchill you would get a Spitfire.

Balance ceomes an issue, but Firaxis could make it work. Might be a good edition, but bad for the civs they made up things for like Maya.

This one gets my vote. It would also add an interesting flavour to unrestricted leaders, but may require a lot of balance because what if a leader's UU and Civ's UU repleace the same unit (in unrestricted leaders of course)? Would you be able to build both of them? Now that would be something really interesting.

It wouldn't make any sense because a lot of civs don't exist now so what would their industrial or modern units be?

I wouldn't mind a UU for each leader since that still gives a civ access to only 1 UU, so it would be balanced. However, I think that would make people not want to play modern leaders like churchill, roosevelt and de gualle because most people prefer ealier UUs.

And how come spain and japan only have one leader. That seems odd when the celts get two.

i d like to see specific uu's for asian, european, american, african, middle eastern civ or with even more regional subdivisions. Could be several UU (it wouldnt be unique anymore) a nice set of units perhaps 5 or six.....

Technically, yes. It would make it more realistic but the game wouldn't necessarily be any better for it. Polls like this typically will have people respond to different interpretations of the question.

UUs for time periods where the civ did not exist would have to be made up, and this might detract from realism instead.

Having multiple UUs might not be a bad idea, and certain civs could have them spread out over an extended number of eras while others would have them concentrated in 1 or 2 eras.
