Its not a file just something i did to make the game funnier. Everyone says the explorer is useless. Its not totaly useless but could use some help. So i made it into a mercenary unit. I went into cvi3 edit. Went to the explorer unit and gave it hidden nationaliy and gave it attack and defensce. Clickon the thing that said make computer use for offensce and used it. It made the next game fun. But make sure to crank up the production cost to make the game balanced

I turned the Explorer into a Partisan unit that can move fast behind enemy lines and do some pillaging.

The explorer isn't useless at all! I love having the little guys accompany my invasion forces: they can pillage key resources, spy out the location of enemy troops in the fog of war, etc. I won't fight a war without one now! They don't need to be modded in my opinion, but hey, whatever makes you happy. :)

I just give them 3 defense, and 1 attack, and leave all the other stats on default. I use it to slow down incoming attacks and spy on enemies before/during a war. A good guerilla warfare unit.

Monk: That's exactly what I do. I turn mine into a highwayman though.

The explorer is a very useful unit as it is. It treats all squares as roads, also on enemy territory. They can pillage. And they are very cheap to build.

The first thing I do when I start a war is to send 20+ explorers deep into enemy territory to pillage the enemy's infrastructure. Since they are non-combat units, the enemy will not do much to kill them. He will only capture those that are blocking his combat units' advance. Hence, I can have them creating caos for almost the full duration of the war.

Thanks to gzollinger for posting the idea in this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18252. It has proven really helpful.

Sounds good! I thought Civ3 should have a land-based version of a Privateer, and this sounds like a good purpose for an otherwise marginally useful unit.

But what happens if it captures a city? Does the other civ realize who's attacking and declare war, or do they stay oblivious?

Never even saw an Explorer until I edited their stats. Tried a couple different things but the AI didn't seem to catch on to the new potential uses. Eventually abandoned the idea and went back to default. Now, if I'm the only civ using them (to pillage, etc) at least I don't feel like I have an advantage.

I used Zouave's idea and turned it into a partisan. Good Idea!

The problem I have (well dilemma is perhaps more appropriate) is that whenever you change the role or abilities of a unit, doesn't that give you an unfair advantage over the AI? You may know that an Explorer can pillage - but presumably the AI wouldn't attempt to do so. Or does the AI make sensible use of such modified units?

When you edit units, there is a series of checkboxes for what the AI does with it. If you looked at spearman, the box "defense" has been checked. If you looket at impi, the box "offense" has been checked. If you want a pillaging unit, check offense.

i did. Dang computer used it againist me :( but made the game fun. Also 6attack and 6 defensce is to much. 4 attack and 2 defensce is good and make is cost as much as a knight. So u really cant take a city with them cause everyone has musketmen by then or are real close. But are good at pillaging resources 10 turns or so before war and when there workers come to connect the resource back u get some free workers :)
