Well, I founded all 7 religions with Gandhi on prince. My culture was so great and superior that I flipped two cities without any of mine being near them at all. I actually aimed at having everyone adopt Buddhism while preventing anyone from wanting to convert to anything else by monopolizing all the religions. While this worked in the game before (even though I founded only 4 religions), in this round some far away civs inexplicably converted to Hinduism (which is newer than Buddhism) before I could do anything about it. Of course this eventually resulted in tension, etc. One civ even converted to the very much newer Confucianism before my missionaries could reach it. Very annoying.
But at the end of the day, what good is it? I tried this out thinking that I'd make me rich, unbeatable and allow me to win w/o even conquering anyone. While it did make me rich (I had 5 shrines and Spiral Minaret and was raking in tons of money even with 100% research) and render my culture unbeatable, my civ became horribly backward sooner or later. In the game before this one I was out-researched very early. In this one, I eventually became out-researched by an entire age during the Industrial era. I don't think I can win a cultural victory before the Persians launched their spaceship. Is there anything to remedy this, or do you simple have to go and beat up someone?
