I am wondering, in higher difficulties, are you never going to be able to outtech the AI, build wonders, and use strategies such as super science city and super growth... instead you should just mass build military and hope to overwhelm the AI or something...

Yes, Yes, Yes, and eh, never really tried that outdated strategy. I'm a landing player, so I don't find it hard to outtech the AI on Deity. The trick is trade. I recommend Elephant U's tips and tricks for new players if you're looking to play on harder levels. As for wonders, it's hard (but not impossible) to get all the ancient wonders on Deity, but not hard at all in general to get the specific ones you want (For landing I always get Marco, Colossus, Copernicus, and Newton's at least. Apollo's, of course, later). In the last 5 turns of the game I usually pick up whatever wonders haven't been built yet, typically about a dozen. SSC is key and is used by many landing players and OCC players.

As for the mass military, that is the domain of Early conquest players like Peaster and Grigor. They win on Deity extremely quickly, and I'll let Peaster chime in with the dates.

Hope this is helpful.

Yeah, the main problem at higher levels is the unhappiness of your people, so you have to devote some resources to that - militia and HG, for example. But that doesn't really reduce your game plan options.

If you want to conquer the AI quickly and easily, then "supergrowth" is a better game plan than "mass build military" (until the endgame).

Hm... SSC is still doable? I thought that the ancient age wonders will be nabbed so fast that you cant really get in on them... :S

Oh and whats a landing player? As in you like to conquer other islands? Err, whats the alternative to landing? >.>

a "landing" player is one who out techs the AI, and builds, launches, and lands a spaceship before the AI civs thereby winning the game by "landing".
An "early landing" player ofcourse lands their colonists on AC long before the "modern" years.
Banach is right, Elephant U's tips are very helpful to an EL player.

ooooo... I thought landing means you land on islands >.>

Well the only alternative in Civ 2 is to kill off everyone else... Is there even time victory in Civ 2? Dunno...

So the AI isnt completely dominating and can tech WAY faster than you even in Deity?

I am not so much a newbie as I play under mid difficulties... (Reagent - Monarch in Civ 3 and Nobel in Civ 4)... So I heard the AI almost completely owns you in tech in Civ 3 on anything higher than the level after Monarch.

If you know how to play with the right tactics the AI civ's might be a little faster in the first 50 turns with their techs but after monarchy and the Marco Polo Wonder it's so easy to get those techs....The Ai can't compete with that. The build a little faster cities then on lower levels...but human players still can do it a lot faster.

As far as getting the early wonders you want/need, you can use vans to build the wonders very quickly. Just rush build the vans you need and add them to the wonder. The AI does not do this, so the human player always has the edge here when building wonders.

I got a question who would be good to be in this thread:

Whats with the time your game will end? I played on chieftain and my game was ended in 2020 after death! But I don´t had all technologys and so on. I had played another game after some months ago and that felt longer then my last.

So anybody can make a difficulty link with all these tips like for Civilization 1? I mean like this: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ1/difficultychart/

Thanks for help.

CSDanger, take a look at:
http://www.civfanatics.com/civ2/strategy/scrolls/#Turns

You can navigate to this and some other useful info about Civ2 on the site by clicking on the War Academy link on the main page of the site (www.civfanatics.com) which is in the left hand panel under Civ2. There are several useful articles there. The link above is from the article called scrolls of ancient wisdom.

Having said that the info above is not completely correct as it implies that difficulty level is the only determining factor in the number of turns played. Actually, Map size is another factor. Duke once made a chart showing the interplay of both factors. I do not have it handy.

I found it. It shows the relationship among difficulty level, map size, and the number of turns in the game.

Thats great Duke and Ali Ardavan. :goodjob: Maybe it isn´t a very great problem with the number of turns in the game because when the game has ended you can carry on to playing it but you only don´t will getting more points for the highscore thats all. And I most play just for fun and not for a highscore so maybe it isn´t a real "problem". But thank you anyway for your tips and links. :king:
