About the whole "units not dying" thing...

Does anyone think that this can be a really cool way of simulating the historical significance of certain units? I mean, some of the most famous units in the American military are the first infantry division, the first marine division, or teh 3rd armoured division.

Its just a random thought I head after reading this article. It said that since there will be far fewer units, each unit will be more important and that we're more likely to develop "personal attachments" to certain units.

That's what I'm looking forward to about it. In Civ IV, every once in a while I'll promote a unit and be proud of it because I know it's a veteran of several wars, I'd really like to have that feeling be of even more importance in V.

I want to name my Units as well, and it would be really cool if each unit had a short blurb about it's history, major battles, promotions, and upgrades would be cool. I have always felt disconnected with my military in Civ games, it's always just felt like i was mass producing units to throw at an enemy in the hopes that they can't mass produce as many units to defend with. I want to have a connection with my military and have my units be important to me, even if it went so far as to have units produce culture as well based on their longevity.

well if what they're saying is true, and you can only produce one or two swordsmen for every iron resource you have access to, then we'd have incredibly few units, and it would then make incredibly good sense for them to produce culture.

The image I had in mind was some of the British regiments, that have been around and fought in nearly every conflict Britain has been in in the last 300 years.

I don't like the idea of units producing culture though; thats not what military units are for...

Yep its going to be just like that and its going to be a great thing. :goodjob:

In civ4 one civ could of easily had something like over 400 units, and if just one unit had woodsman II promotion, it didnt really have any effect unless you had something like 5-10 units with that same promotion. Civ4 was just horrible game when you look at it purely from the military aspect, there was some good things but mostly it was just horrible, especially in the late game.

INdeed, and if units do not die, it may be awesome to have a military division that will actually reach the higher promotion levels.

I guess when CiV comes out, everybody is going to declare war on the nearest civ just to see that amazing combat system :D.

I'm really looking forward to this. I sort of play out this huge story within my mind every game that has nothing at all to do with the reality of what the simulation offers, but in my story every infantryman is important and I feel bad when I send them into situations that I know they won't come out of (as you sometimes have to do during a game).

You can name your units in Civ IV- just click on the unit's name when it's selected and you're good to go.

The "more in-depth stuff!" suggestions I keep seeing across different threads is, in my opinion, odd. You might want to see cars driving around on the roads or an extensive biography for every unit, but after a game or two, you won't pay any attention to it. Instead, the main theater for your attention will be the gameplay, the diplomacy, and the strategy. Having the gamemakers devote attention away from these points in order to make individual waves on each ocean tile or squirrels running on forest tiles to promote "realism" seems pointless.

I would love to collect a bunch of war-hardened elite units and call them my Imperial Guard muwahahahaha and then I send them into battle at the last minute and the enemy shall tremble in fear

I always used to name units in Panzer General when they attained 4 or 5 stars. It makes it more interesting to follow their exploits.
You could check stats and see what campaigns they had fought in as well, by the end of the game only a few elite units had been active ever since the campaigns in Poland.

Wait so how do the attacking units capture cities? The defender only has to surround his cities with suicide (except they don't die) troops that just stand there.

In Panzer General three or four attacks by different full strength units in the same turn should do the trick. Or using air and artillery first to soften them up.

I think you're misinterpreting the mechanic.

Nowhere is it stated that units never die. [In which case, yes, you could protect a city forever by surrounding it by 6 immortal units.]

What has been stated is that full health units will not necessarily die from a single combat.

Absolutely units will die if attacked repeatedly.

Dude, I do that too. Not everytime, but a lot of times. I had a lot of fun imagining the world history for my snow world game.

I love making up stories lol, its the best part of the game, i can;t even remember the last time i played a civ game to win

I hope that supply to "fill in" the weakened unit will work like in Panzer General:

you pay a lot to fill AND keep the experience on the level it has,
and pay normal (less) to fill with unexperienced force, and thus exp. drops...
(you may even lose the last achived promotion(s)?...)
