Accept Christianity or else!

This is kind of a touchy subject, but does anyone else who is actually a Christian (in real life, that is) kinda feel obligated to go for Christianity and bypassing the other religions? It's probably one of the easier ones to get if you choose more pratical techs in the beginning and worry about religion later. But I've gotta say, if I've got a choice between Christianity and one of the other religions as my state government I generally pick Christianity. In some ways I wish the game gave different traits for the different religions, but that would get Firaxis in a LOT of politically incorrect hot water.
Does anyone of another faith feel the same way about choosing their religion in the game?

I did at first but then I didn't like that this could affect the way in which I pick my techs, so now I simply pretend that whichever one I actually get is Christianity. It might sound kind of lame, but this whole game is about imagination to me.

Quick question for you: Do you find that waiting to get Christianity later in the game causes you any negative side effects to your Civ??

I'm a Christian in real life and yes I kinda feel the same way. I first discovered Buddhism and pressed the "it's only superstition" button, not that I believe that or have a problem with any other religion but I just wanted Christianity. I just know more about it, I understand it's beliefs and the other ones I don't.

You can found all religions if you like so it really shouldn't be an issue! If you want Christianity, go ahead and found it, but you don't have to found it as the only religion, IMHO... I'm Christian myself, but I'm open-minded enough to accept the fact, that other people believe in other things and it's fine as long as everybody tolerates everybody elses opinions...

Currently my state-religion is Taoism and I don't have Christanity yet... So what? And Everybody: no offense at all, but it's JUST A GAME! That's what it comes down to...

Just a game, indeed. I'm an American, but I don't always play as one. I'm male, but I don't always play as one. I'm not much for war, but sometimes I start them just for fun.

How should religion be any different? I think that it has added a great deal of realism to the game. Religion has been responsible for a great many of the conflicts/genocides in our history.

That's my Man!!! :goodjob:
Totally agree on everything you said!

I usually go with the religion that best fits the culture I'm playing. If I'm playing an Asian civ I usually go with Tao or Buddhism etc..

ou1975 - that's a good point. Good to kind of rollplay it like that.

Everyone else, yes, I understand it's just a game, but I still feel in tinge of guilt when building a Buddist Missionary so that I can spread it throughout the world. Yes, it's only play, but still. And I'm not saying I think I'm on the road to eternal damnnation by doing it, but it makes me think for a moment.

If your not a religious person it's a little like this: Imagine being a hardcore democrat and having to play as Bush in charge of a redneck/neocon America. It just doesn't feel right. :ack:

im catholic and no i dont feel obligated to research that religion. I actually think learning about diff religons is fun.

Besides its just a game.

Don't confuse Religion with Faith. Religion is a man-made construct in order to better live life. But all religions do that. So they are all equal. I am Christian, but thats just a formality. That I have faith in God is not. Civ IV made a great choice in making all religion have the same effect, because that is exactly the case.

I think the people having the problems enjoying the game are the ones going for science and ignoring religion ala' civ 3.
I personally think that the religion aspect is a good idea but shouldn't be a break all make all way to succeed in the game.

@ Meteor punch- hardcore Dems are just as bad as Hardcore pubs-= most political morons in my book.
Moderation is the way to go.

I am a Christian and my faith is a very big part of my life. When I first read about the religion aspect I too was a bit concerned. A Few reasons I am not as concerned:

1) The religions are neutral with respect to one another (no bonus for Islam vs Jew for example)
2) The timing in the game makes sense, especially those who want some degree of historical accuracy (making Christianity available before Judaism would fly about as well as making Calvary available before longbowman)
3) It is a game, not a faith statement, not a personal declaration

Bear in mind that I probably will never play in MP so it is a bit easier for me to dismiss an AI opponent. End the end, if it is that big of an issue MOD IT right?

Ya know, I hate to admit it but yeah I kind of feel obligated to go for Christianity. However I did found Islam and Taoism as well so I figure it evens out. :)

Nope, got Judaism, made it state religion. Later I developed Christianity and squashed it....didnt let it send out missionaries till I had free religion. Good part of game is - Christianity spread on its own to countries on the other side of the world. Gotta love it. I had spread Judaism to half the world tho before I got Free religion and now that the UN rez on Free Religion passed none of that matters except the Judaism and Christianity money that came in...but sadly free religion killed that. Went from 3k gold/turn to 400/gpt.
Remember it is just a game - God isnt going to abandon you because of the religion you choose in this GAME.
