Accidentally at War?

I'm down to me, Japan, Babylon, India and Greece. I've taken out all the other civs (about 6) but my rep is shot as I keep using Right Of Passage to pre-position troops for killer blows.

Japan keeps trying to go to war with me but I keep binding him with trade and alliances etc. Now I have him in an alliance vs Greece but when I take out Greece's last city I find I am at war with Japan. No Diplomacy or war declaration screen just suddenly we're at war.

Has anyone else had this?

Did you tie a peace treaty in with a military alliance?

Once the military alliance finishes then so does the peace treaty I think

I did! Damn damn damn. Guess I'm going to have to besiege Athens until I'm ready and hunkered down for the war with Japan.

And all I wanted was a few turns of peace to ramp up the happy citizens! Oh well, get on with more Modern Armour you peasants!

You may already know this, but I'll say it anyway: Hooking a PT to an alliance is also a useful way to get the AI to declare on you, if you're not interested in peace. The AI almost never seems to hold out for the full 20 turns of an alliance & once they make peace, they automatically DOW you.
