Here's the situation. (It's hypothetical, but I've been doing some thinking. I haven't really had time to play any games.)

Say you have Theory of Evolution, and a tech, both due to be done on the same turn. What will happen?

I've had it happen - you get the one you've been working on and one additional, both from the ToE. Then you get to start working on a new advance.

The first thing willbe you complete the tech and then can select the next one to research. The ToE will come in and give you that tech and ask you what you want next.

That tech will then be given and you select the one you actually will start learning. Most will pick AT and Electronics, but you may have a solid reason to go another way.

No, not quite the way it works. :) Yes, you get the tech you are working on, BUT... When both a tech and ToE come on the same turn, the game acknowledges the tech first and asks you what you want to research next, THEN the ToE comes up and gives you the one just chose plus one more. After that you choose a 4th tech to actually begin researching. So...

1. current tech comes in, choose new
2. ToE give new and 1 more
3. pick still another to begin

:D

Edit: X-post with vmxa

^^^ That must have been what was going on, since I was going by what the game was telling me - the last time I actually built the ToE while still researching I was at war with someone, and bad things started to happen.

what's fun is if you are playing as a scientific civ with scientific opponents and time finishing ToE to be the same time you switch eras....

You can end up with 7 Modern Era techs right off!! (4 from other civs, your free, free ToE)

btw - why is Advanced Flight in the Industrial Era? It's optional and you can't research it until you are in modern times anyway...

^ Good point! Maybe just because there are already four first-tier modern techs. If Ad Flight got modernised, it would also be tier tech (unless they gave it Rockets or Computers or somesuch as a prerequisite), and there's only so many techs you can cram into one tier on the F6 screen.

I think it's left over from eliminating radio. you didn't need moterized transport to get advanced flight then, IIRC, but then you needed electronics to get motorized transport.

Why did they get rid of radio? Oh, well. And did we really need ironclads as a tech? They were fine with steam power.

Micromanage the city, so that ToE finishes one turn after the tech. If necessary, turn citizens from high shield squares (hills, mountains) into tax collectors/scientists.

I think it is good idea. The less the better. And Ironclads also good. Otherwise Freegate was too short.

The ToE should always complete on the same turn as your current research goal. If necessary switch temporarily to Palace/Universal Suffrage to delay ToE completion for a few turns. (Do not forget to switch back IBT)

Say....what does IBT stand for? Is it 'something Between Turns,' or 'Inter-something-Turn?' Or neither?
