Does Adam Smith's Trading Co. pay for the upkeep of all economic city improvements, or just the city you built it in?

All economic improvements of your nation.

Definitely one of my favorite mid-game Wonders.

I never used to go for it until recently. It's one of three in the middle ages I never try to go without now (the others being the Sistine Chapel and J.S.Bach's Cathedral). When I'm a commercial civ (it's my favourite trait) I sometimes find I can sustain an 80/20 or even 90/10 tax rate in favour of science after building it

I think the complete list of Commericial buildings is: Marketplace, Bank, Stock Exchange, Commercial Dock, Harbor, Airport, so it should save you a lot of money on those things, depending on how many cities you have and how many of them you have in those cities.

I'm not sure if it's the most useful wonder in the game, but it's a very, very, good one. It's one of the 5 Middle Ages wonders I'll always try to get if I can (The other 4 are Sun Tzu, Leo's Workshop, Copernicus, and Newton), and none of them, with the possible exception of Leonardo's Workshop, save me nearly as much money as Smith's Trading Company does.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but it is topic specific and I hate to start a new thread just to ask a Q.

Why is it that some cities can build this wonder and others can't?

Case: Washington and New York are both currently building banks. Washington can build the Trading Co, but NY has it grayed out. Why?

You might have rushed some of the shields in New York or cut down a forest or disbanded a unit or done something else to get more shields. Those can't be used on wonders, so you can't change something that has shields rushed from one of those methods into a Wonder.

Well, I did disband a warrior from NY to help boost my net income. But I was going to put the Trading Company (TC) next in my To Do list after it finishes the bank it is currently doing.

Are you saying I will be able to build the TC in NY after it finishes the bank?

Yeah. At least, you should be able to.

This may help, too. It is from Ginger_Ale's sticky on Frequently Asked Questions - Civ3, Play The World, & Conquests, in the City Management Questions section.

Why can't I build a wonder in a city?

There are a number of reasons why you might not be able to, but you only need one to prevent you from building the wonder! If a wonder's name appears gray in your production queue, look over these reasons. First off, you can only build a wonder in one city. Also, you can't rush a wonder by sacrificing population (Despotism, Communism, Fascism), by rushing it with gold (other governments), or by forest chops. So, if you have done this on another item (say a Bank), and you try to switch from building a Bank to a wonder, it won't let you because you hurried production. Also, some wonders (Great and Small) require things before you build them (e.g. SDI Defense requires 5 SAM Batteries built in your cities; Wall Street requires 5 Stock Exchanges). Other wonders require access to fresh water, while some require sea water (like the Colossus).
