So, I just became aware in the latest developer stream, where they played as Gorgo, that part of the reason hoplites were losing to warriors, is that the AI now gets combat bonuses on higher difficulty settings. Frankly, I have never liked the way Civilization games increase difficulty by giving the AI bonuses. Civilization is, by its very concept, a symmetrical game. All Civilizations start off on equal footing in ancient times, and things develop from there. The bonuses therefore feel like the AI is cheating. It would have been an entirely different matter if this was an asymmetrical game.
Now, I have lived with the AI getting bonuses for a long time, and I am able to suspend my disbelief somewhat, because I don't really look inside AI cities. However, the AI getting combat bonuses is very difficult to ignore, and I fear it will ruin immersion for me. This is why I want to relaunch an old suggestion:
Please provide "advanced" difficulty settings, so that we can enable or disable the features used to increase difficulty individually.
I would always want to play against the smartest AI, I would permit some yield bonuses if the AI is still stupid, and I would leave combat bonuses permanently off.
Is there any way to send suggestions directly to Firaxis?
