I know I must be stupid to ask this question, but I can't seem to get past middle ages before the game ends. Can you give me any tips reserching faster

The more cities you have, the more tax income you get, the more you can raise your science rate.
Also, I like to build a marketplace, library and university in each city, even if they are purely military cities.
If you can, get a bank in them too.
Daft as it may sound, play on a higher difficulty. The game is designed so that there is not enough time to do everything yourself. This means that you should trade for at least some of your techs (especially the earlier ones) with the AI rather than dong so yourself. At higher difficulties the AI researches much faster and nromally sets the pace for you to try and match into the middle ages.
I normally play at monarch level and I'm dissapointed if I'm not in the modern era by 1500AD.
