AEGIS Cruiser is USELESS

What is the actual use of AEGIS cruiser supposed to be? Worse than battleship, yet you can only build it at the very end of the technology tree! They are slow, short-ranged, and with stupid bombard capability who only works once even five times.

And I really wondered why can't you load the cruise missile in it (or to any ship!) as well!

AEGIS is a defensive ship - try shooting a missile at it and compare the results to other ships...

Unless I am on a small island and have to have a navy early I dont build any warships except the battleship. I will sometimes build earlier transport units to explore and make contact but the only warship worth building is the battleship.

Too bad Sid doesn't understand that once bombers and missiles became common battleships became too vulnerable to be the most important naval unit.

BB's historically also rarely spent their time bombarding "improvements". Not cost effective, too time-consuming, and too risky.

i always seem to win (or lose) before i get aegis and radar artillery, so i don't even know what they look like. in civ2 aegis cruisers were critical because battleships fell easily to cruise missiles and bombers. but since bombers can't kill ships in civ3 aegis are less critical. sometimes i even park ships outside my cities so enemy bombers would bomb them instead of my cities and improvements.

I have never gotten to the Aegis. One win or another , or a loss, kicks in.
It is defensive in nature, ie, missilees have a much smaller chance to hit it, and I believe that goes for subs. I can also see subs, right?
However, if a ship is purely defensive, why bother ? Unless you intend to park it in plain sight to be a target...
What we need is an Aegis with missiles and a cloaking device..:D

Also I have not managed to load cruise missiles onto any trnasport, not the transport, nor the carrier, nor the helicopter.
For me they are stuck on their original continent, and therefore useless after I subjugate that.

Agree. The Aegis cruiser is possibly the most useless unit in the game.

I have also stumbled on the problem of moving cruise missiles. Is there any way to move them from one continent to another???

I've noticed that while artillery and bombing alone can't sink ships, cruise missiles CAN sink ships in Civ III. Also I play with modified rules that allow an Aegis cruiser to load cruise missiles.

How do u do that?

All i can seem to do is allow them to carry tactical nukes in the editor...

Also does anyone know what happens when more than 1 AI strategy is enabled, for instance naval power and naval missile transport?

I wanted to enable the Aegis to carry cruise missles as well. Seems it is not as basic as I was hoping, as there is no 'enable' switch to allow units to carry cruise missles, just nukes.
I was thinking of taking the nuke flag off of the tatical nuke, giving it regular bombardment stats as per cruise missle, and then allowing the Aegis to carry tatical nukes.
The only problem I can see (I have yet to try this though) is will the enemy SDI intercept my Nuke-less tatical nuke ....

And thus we see how absurd much of Civ III is. Bombers being unable to destroy any warship is unacceptable and ludicrous, besides being totally non-historical.

I have gone into Editor and given bombers an attack and defense strengh, and unclicked "immobile". Maybe this will work.

If there is no way to get bombers to destroy warships I will expect Firaxis to patch it. Or I will not be interested in playing a game so nonsensical.

You need to do several things to load cruise missiles.

First, on the ships you want to be able to carry cruise missiles, you must enable the ships to load. Look at the Nuclear Submarine, and see what flags it has, not only in the list of abilities (e.g., "Carry Tactical Missiles"), but also in the actions (needs to be able to load the missiles).

Next, go to cruise missiles, and compare them to tactical nukes. See what flags and actions that tactical nukes have that cruise missiles lack. I expect there will be a flag of "Tactical Missile" and actions like "Load" and "Unload."

I've done that, and it's quite fun. Only one trouble, however: You CAN go through those missiles very fast, and then what? You're halfway around the globe, and you have to go back to reload. Cruise missiles are great, but they aren't decisive. And if you come to rely on them, what happens when you run out and have to take ten turns to get back to where they are? I'd suggest making cruise missiles airlift-able, thus you can manufacture them in your core cities, and airlift them to recently captured cities (that have airports). That's the best you can do, I say.

Now, as to cruise missiles being able to sink ships, they can. With one proviso: You can't target ships that have only one hit point left. So, IF the cruise missile is targeted at a ship that has at least two hit points, and IF the cruise missile dumps all the remaining hit points, THEN the ship will sink. Other than that, it's just like bombardment.

Hope this helps.

If you hold the 'B' (bombard) key down, you can even target ships with one hit point left with bombers and cruise missiles. Not sure if a bomber is capable of finishing off the ship in this case though.
