OK, firstly, I must add that I play the game on mostly Settler or Chieftain difficulty because I don't like to lose. I am a newbie in this game and my strategy sucks big time! :D

I tried to play on the King's difficulty level but always end up losing. Finally, I played on a very tiny map, with no city states or barbarians and took the Chinese. England was my opponent and I won by conquering the capital city! At last! I am so happy but I know that this is nothing compared to a Deity victory. However, this is a great encouragement for me.

Now I am keen on improving on my gameplay and don't wish to play on the Settler, Chieftain, or Warlord level.

How do I go from here? I am sick of crushing my opponents on Settler difficulty and by playing on Settler difficulty most of he time, I don't learn anything much.

Thanks! Civilization 5 is much better than Total War Shogun 2 by the way in terms of the depth of gameplay! It is like playing chess!

:goodjob:

Nice job at winning your 1st King victory. I learn better how to beat King by playing and failing. If you start a map and lose. Don't start a new game restart the same map and try a different strategy, but then you are also using map knowledge in helping you win.

If you keep having problems with some aspect take a screenshot and post it in the forums ask questions.

It is one failing of mine my mind reading power just don't work over the internet. I won't know your style of play unless you give details. Your build orders starting techs what you do with warriors and scout.

Is nuking a city with units from another Civ a good idea? I found out that one is an instant DOW.

Thanks for the kind reply. I usually try to win by dominating my opponents and going for animal husbandry. I try to get horses as soon as possible. But don't you feel heartbroken when you lose or demoralized?

Depends on how I lost. If its a runaway Civ on the next continent. Not much I could have done but those make some of the best wins.

If I lose due to some silly mistake, I feel worse. But then I think its only a game. A good game a player is designed to lose until you figure out the trick.

In Civ there are so many tricks to learn and use there are always ways to have fun.

I also read some of the Diety challenges and other games people have played. When the pros have problems with some games, I know I shouldn't beat myself over having problems even at an easier difficulty.

Civ5 I think, because of discernable flavours the AI strategy is much more hit/miss on a given difficulty level than any previous games.

Previous Civ games have a stock 'expansion' AI and leaders with aggresiveness modifiers but most follow the broad strategy of expansion, war, and alliances.

Civ5's difficulty is all about where you start and who you start next to. Granted this was relevant in the past, but because AI pursues such divergent grand strategy now, starting next to a builder will alter your game drastically as opposed to starting next to someone who sees you as a threat and decides to take you out early. Further, an AI who decides to give you space and warmonger someone else will also alter your strategy.

Good job. Often I play a small pangaea map king difficulty to get in my civ5 "fix" for a few days. Like you, I don't like to lose, but this is the "least" game that is still fun for me.

Congrats! Playing on King can be very difficult. It's quite a step up from Prince!

Thanks for the kind reply! But I played on King's level with no barbarians and no city states and even then it was difficult for me! I had to reload the game a few times to get my strategy right!

I wonder how people can win on Emperor, Immortal and even on Deity! Right now, I am too scared to even try playing on Emperor! :D

To tell you the truth, I like playing on Settler difficulty because I like toe feeling of bullying other civilizations! But I guess that in the long run, this would never improve my gameplay! I am not a hardcore Civilization 5 player and don't have the patience to study the game in depth!

By the way, have you tried playing on Emperor difficulty and won?

:king:

I think that what makes the advances in difficulty levels easier is when you start to learn what not build.

I feel like I bully most civilizations right now on immortal... deity, a little less so at this point but I'm working on it.

Sure you get runaway civs once in a while you just can't get to, and I don't win all games... but in general it's not hard to bully.

I can barely win a cultural or domination victory on Prince.
I can easily win Science on King, maybe Emperor, and a slim chance of immortal.
Science victories are indeed the easiest.
Play as Babylon or Korea (if you have them, if not, consider getting them) and try to get at least 10 techs ahead of the next most advanced player.
Congrats and all, but King with 3 players isn't too hard.
Play on Warlord with 8, put a huge focus on research, then move up.
Good luck, I only wish I had found this forum when I was at your level.

Well done. Keep playing at King - It's going to seem hard at first, but play a few games with tactics you're comfortable with such as domination, then try something you're less comfortable with, like changing the map type/victory condition. Once you can win what you're not comfortable playing on King, move up!

Load autosave 4000bc?

That would be somewhat Ok for experimenting, but of course a win earned by this method would count for nothing. You would already know where the resources and other civs were and that would be a huge unfair advantage.

But I played on King's level with no barbarians and no city states and even then it was difficult for me!

This could actually make it more difficult, not less difficult. On King or lower difficulty the AI civs can have a tough time with barbarians. The barbs will often slow down the expansion of the AI by capturing settlers and workers. On higher difficulties the AI civs can handle them easier due to more units. And CS are quite powerful in that they will give you resources and food/culture that you would otherwise not get. For example, if you have no iron or horses in your area you can often get them from CS. With no CS you don't have that option. If you happen to have close and very aggressive neighbors it can be quite difficult without access to early iron for producing swordsman and siege weapons.

I agree with this. I play at the King level, and the proper use of CS's has really made the difference in some of my strategies. My last game I got friendly with a couple militaristic CS's (for some quests, not money) and the units they gave me were key in pushing off my aggressive neighbor. Later in teh game they acted as a buffer preventing invasion from AI's who I'm sure would have otherwise attacked me.

How does one restart the same map?

You can load autosave, but then you will have to stick with the map as that autosave is deleted when you spawn a new map.

But you can also save map when you hit the save button. If you do this, the map will show up under advanced settings, when you are setting up a new map. It will be there alongside the continents and pangea and the other options of maps.

This way, you can use it playing other Civs on it. But you will start different places.

So do this is it was a particularly good map, else make a real save a turn or two into the game. You can then use this as base if you lose the autosave.
