AG6 - The OCC Space Race (Monarch)

Ivory from France for 5 per.

I do not like the look of teh 2(!) ottoman Galleys.... yeah yeah, he will leave, but I do not trust this. Blockade the forest spot next to town (as it would be the preferred landing site) witht he Knight.

(1) war! The ottos have landed 2 Med Inf and a Pike! Bombard the Pike down 2 HP with the Dromons, kill one Med Inf with the Knight. hunker down. Will produce another Knight next turn as we may need it soon!

IT: pike kills Med Inf and promotes, Otto pike goes off towards coal... well, he will not live long.
Corp is in, Steel in 11!

(2) stock Exchange started - 5 turns. :aargh: but not having a second Knight ready was too risky IMO. get rid of the obnoxious Pike.

Sell Sanitation to Egypt for Mil Trad, Nac and - this is the good bit - 3 gold per turn. I want them in a per tunr deal so the Ottos cannot buy them against us.
Sell Medicine to France for the same reason. I do not want alliances, we must be able to make peace whenever the Ottos land large forces, so this is the best way to keep these two AIs out of alliances with Otto.

Sumeria has Nat - would be a nice way of shoring up our defences, but they even turn down an offer of Steam, Mil Trad, Med as 'insulting'

(3) another galley shows up, bombard it. as it is alone I risk a landing.

1 horsie

(4) further bomb the galley, again 1 bomb misses. kill the horse.
hey, if we have Mil Trad - it might be a good idea to upgrade the Knights, right? 100 gold to Maya for Horses and we are now the proud owners of 2 Cavalry units :D

(5) Egypt is getting a tiny bit expensive: they want Dyes for Wines, Saltpeter, Furs. Oh well.

(6) Zulu Galley to the north. uh-oh! They're still ins tone age, but we can't use more foes atm....

uni sold, back in 3, no change on Steel :D

(7) we get 13 Gold and their WM from the Ottos for peace. Phew! no dogpile....
Spices from Egypt - we could do without, but they are cheap @ 100 and we cna use good relations. Now running a whopping -28 Gold per turn. Look around for income: Shaka, under pressure from Sumeria, pays 10 per and 30 for Repulbic. Abe coughs up WM+40 for Nav.

(8) too early to start a prebuild (US in only 17) after we rebuild the Uni, start a coal plant for now. Sci to 90% gives us +2 and Steel still in 4.

(9) Maya pay 30 and 2per for Nav.
Nat is now also known to Egypt, in case of emregancy it is now affordable

(10) nothing.

caution! Coal palnt due next turn, we must now decide if we want it or not. Actually, it was a dumb idea by me, as the AIs are so incerdicly slow in research - I really thought someone would have Electricity by now :(

turn down science, too, Steel next turn!

If you want to make sure the ottos can't buy anyone against us, a MA against them would be better. It also would distract some troops against us. I would advise to rally some others against them. Especcialy the small, backward ones with don't like us anyway (the zulu for instance). With their good tech the ottos can buy several of the small ones, so we should do it before!

Electricity: We still have 3 full techs to research and I think we have a high chance to get it from AI. If not, we can try it later by letting them research Mass Production when we do Radio.

Oh Buto expands. We'll lose iron/coal in 45 turns (if there is temple). We could take it out if that happens, but that would be tough as I forsee Egypt will always keep paying gpt to us. So probably just buy them back. In fact we'll not need these two resources anymore once we complete the railroads (until someone pillage/bombard us).

The SE island: it has horses. We could send a couple of units/workers and create a colony there and connect to Athribis. But probably not worth the trouble. Just a thought. (and it would be worth if there is oil/rubber).

coal plant: we definitely don't want it. The pollution isn't worth it. Switch to cav and disband an MDI? And remember to optimize shield/food.

trade: we can actually get 150gpt+237g from Egypt by Industrialization now. I kinda like the deal even it's not full price. We are then still/only two techs ahead. AIs will get it at some point eventually. What do others think?

BTW we should always research Refining before Steel as it reveals oil.

The only formidable enemy we don't want to get to war with is Egypt, so keep it as happy as possible.

Although I do feel that we should avoid MA, MA with Egypt against SOMEONE might actually be a good idea. It would ensure that Egypt won't come after us. Especially in the late game stage when we are close to launch, I'd suggest doing it to make sure we are safe.

For now, it's still too early, but watch for Egypt. If there is sign that it may get aggressive, get it into war with someone faraway might be a good idea. But I'd rather choose Maya instead of Ottoman as we want Sumeria/Ottoman to survive until we squeeze free techs from them.

And we need better military when we have enough gold (which will happen very soon).

yoshi: and if I had done the alliances and the Ottos manage to come in wiht lots of troops - even outdated - at once - what then?
let them pillage us?

no, we have had good relations and the chance of them ottos buying a strong trading partner of ours was weak. So I made sure they STAYED good trading partners.

btw, Otto approached us about peace, not the other way round.....

IHT: Move our blocking units; there are no more legal spots for the AI to settle in the East of our island, while there is one spot in the West where they could steal one of our dyes.

Renegotiate the dyes for incense with the French to include their WM and then sell the WM around for 130 gold and 4gpt total. The Egyptians will actually accept Industrialization for Nationalism (getting them into a 150gpt deal is an invitation to a sneak attack imho and even if it isn't, it will destroy their ability to research. We should be selling our techs below full price to keep the rate up !). I'm not going to take it yet though - I want US as a ToE prebuild).

Science turned down a notch for Steel next turn, Coal plant switched to cav.

1365 AD (1) Steel comes in, Refining is next in 12 turns at max sci (-16gpt).

1370 AD (2) Upgrade a pike to a musket, Maya start Magellan's.

1375 AD (3) Musket - cavalry. One MedInf disbanded.

1380 AD (4) Sell Steam to Sumeria for WM, 4gpt and 30 gold - nowhere near full price, of course, but every little bit helps :D.

1385 AD (5) Cav comes in, for want of a better production plan Constantinople will build wealth.

1395 AD (7) French complete Magellan's - I think that should trigger their GA if they haven't had one before.

1400 AD (8) Sell Military Tradition to the Americans for WM, 14gpt and 50 gold.

1405 AD (9) Establish embassies with the Americans and Maya - they might conceivably come in handy eventually.

1410 AD (10) Grenoble's borders expand and our Dromons get booted. Sumerians recapture Sumer from the Zulu (I had actually entertained the idea of sending our cav over to help them - we can use Gilgamesh, but not Shaka !)

1415 AD (11) Refining next turn, but I can't turn down science.

1420 AD (12) Renew horses from the Maya for Military Tradition; they throw in a WM and change too. Refining comes in, up next is Combustion in 11.

1430 AD (14) Sumeria has lost Sumer again.

1435 AD (15) Pollution hits; next player can either stop the workers mining over the forest or start clearing right now.

Score 87 gold and 2gpt trading the WM around. Combustion due in 8, no-one has Electricity yet. The Otto's are still gracious btw :).

Note: Flight will make the Colossus obsolete! I think that after Combustion we should go for Electricity.

Also: We can get Nationalism plus gpt for Industrialization (at least from France, maybe also from others). After that we should sell to Egypt and other civs, only for reasonable prices. Egypt doesn't pay full prices and choosing them first endageres getting Nationalism.

Well...Egypt will pay 124 gpt and France 108 gpt (without Nationalism...). Not full prices, but nice. So another civ should be choosen to swap Nationalism with and after that we should trade with Egypt and France.

EDIT: Egypt and France can pay full prices at 2nd and 3rd. If we would choose to trade with them first: less money or no Nationalism.

EDIT2: I suggest to trade with America first for Nationalism and gpt, then Egypt for gpt and then France for gpt. Other civs for lower prices are fine by me :)

But I want AI to research Electricity. Looks like not working out. But RP will definitely work.

Note, there are lots of Egyptian settlers around our iron colony, and they WILL settle there!

Next player please move two cavs immediately to the two tiles SE to the colony. If they settle at the current place, we'll still lose it once the city expands. We haven't finished railroading yet!

All: what is the best tactic? Make Colossus obsolete 40 turns earlier and have a shot at free Electricity or change our research goal to Electricity after the current one?

Note that we are NOT sure to get Electricity after Flight, making the loss of the Colossus effect more painfull. Also: when one AI gets Electricity, they may keep it at monopoly prices, meaning that we have to pay Corperation, Steel and Refining to get it... (when Corporation alone is too cheap we have to gift that in order to then have two techs to trade).

EDIT: That would mean the following research path in the IA:

-Combustion
-Electricity
-Scientific Method
-Atomic Theory
-Electronics
-Radio
-Replaceable Parts (which the AI may have researched)
-Mass Production
-Motorized Transport
-Flight
