AG8 - Let's try Sid

With 1 Offensive & 2 defensive Armies already on Portugese soil, I think we can count this game a win. There's still plenty of fun to be had and I guess we can choose whether to win by domination or conquest. Domination would be faster as we only need to press on with our Armies, razing & resettling or capturing where feasible. Conquest would take longer but might be more fun :)

What do the rest of the team think?

Nice :cool: Our continent to ourselves and two rifle armies in Portugal. Those cannons near Smyrna could have been captured, if only the AI knew that they are capable of doing that in C3C (non amphibious forces can capture non-defense units from boats) :( Anyway, I'd like us to win this one by domination (I like to finish a won game fast and then move on to a next challenge). But when a majority wants to win by conquest, that is OK. Domination and conquest are both great ways of winning.
 
I want to win by the fastest means, so Domination. :)
 
Domination means building temples in former Sumerian, Byzantine and Portuguese cites. We are at 56% population and 43% land. And of lot of the needed land can be taken peacefully. But we need to conquer the southern parts of Portugal and the Inca for sure.
 
Preturn: As Aggie suggested I rush a few temples.

I am going to keep the pillaging rifle army at 3 rifles as I don't think it will be attacked. so it is not worth turning it back. If it gets a chance to meet up with a rifle in the future, I will add it then.

The cities all look in good shape as was mentioned by Ted, in fact I would say it is superb - probably the best I have seen handed to me in an SG. MMing that many cities simultaneously to optimal shields takes real patience and skill.

IBT: A bunch of boats are seen scurrying about. The portuguese anthill has officially been kicked.

1280 AD: Army kills 3 rifles in Guimaries. I use the Elite to attack a longbow and we get a leader! Good call on including him.
It will become an army as there is nothing worth really rushing.

I keep the town so that some land is "ours" and for the port so that units don't need to spend a move landing. The risk is that the flip chance is high (won't keep units of value in it).

I start naming the Galleons so I know which is which (it is annoying to load the one with no movement).

Gayaaghe turns out to be very tricky to get to 20 shields - there are 10 ways to have 19 shields but only 1 to get to 20.

I spend our gold on an army. That will give us 2 new cav armies next turn.

IBT: A Rifle and 3 Cav are dropped off.

1285 AD: I replace Guimarires with Beachy Head. I narrowly avoid the Most boneheaded move of the game award, when I remember to move our galleys out of the town so they aren't all destroyed. We are sunk without those galleys.

The portuguese troops in our lands gives free chance for upgrade of our troops and somthing for one of armies to do. We get two elites and 2 losses. I should have bombarded first. I was thinking 6 vs 3 gave us good enough odds to not have losses.

Attack Lisbon, but army is injured so does not continue attack

IBT: I am letting our deals with the Incas expire. We just lost spices

1290 AD: Attack Lisbon. We lose a few cav, and gain a leader which becomes another Army. We capture the city and gain Magellan. That is a keeper!

I can't make up my mind on whether to get industrialization. I rush an army instead. I go with Ted's culture idea and build some culture buildings.

1295 AD: Begin attack on Oporto. Kill a few random units including a small landing party.

IBT: Missed a few towns on the happiness check last turn? I think we lost our war happiness? A lux? It is not WW.

1300 AD: Kill some more units in Oporto. He has a lot in this town for some reason - more than the capitol had. Adjust cities.

IBT: No landings this turn.

1305 AD: Attack Oporto and finally take it. The number of defenders was in the teens, though some were draftees.
We get smiths (I am keeping the city)

1310 AD: Moving up cannon and healing of armies.

1315 AD: Bombard Sagres and then capture it with Cav. We still lose an Elite vs a 1 hp rifle.
Portugal has industrialization BTW, but noone we are at peace do.
Rush another army.

1320 AD: Replace Sagres with a town of our own which I rename to Newton.
Capture Lagos and Coimbra

1325 AD: Capture Eritia which has Sistines. This also drives the Portuguese capitol far away to its "other half" which will reduce flips.

This may have been my last turn.

I didn't check diplo; you probably will want to.

I tried not t make deals with the Incas so we could declare war. I believe the Incas declared peace with Portugal so we could do the same.

We have 5 cav armies, and 2 rifle armies with another army being built next turn.

The fact that there are 3 shades of purple->pink is annoying.


I kept the cities with wonders. I have a lot of settlers for replacement of the other towns.
 
Here is a picture of the war zone.

There are two more cities of portugal in their old core to the upper right of the picture. One is size 12 and one is size 1 and so fairly new. This means portugal only has a single core city.

It may be easier to go for the inca next rather than trying to get up to the rest of portugal.

We still have two turns left of an alliance vs the Portuguese (with Rome). But I'd say that we should remain at war to recapture flipped cities. Despite the war weariness. I would also declare war on the Inca one turn after we capture the two southern Portuguese towns. And ask Rome to join us here.

EDIT: I would also sell the buildings needing upkeep in the ex-Portuguese cities we want to hold (execept for the barracks). Also: we can grab a few more tiles on our own island with temples. We still need 351 tiles to win. The population is at 65%, so that is no issue anymore.

WW is still at the lowest level (25%) with Portugal so we can stay easily stay at war. That could change if cities flip. Tech advancement has basically come to a standstill with all the wars and the fact we have taken most of the cities of the tech leader.

I agree with the plan to attack Incas with support from Rome. The armies all need healing, but in 3-4 turns we should be ready to attack. With 6 offensive and 2 defensive armies, I think we can have this game wrapped up fairly quickly. There are 5-7 settlers for the next player to use already across. I also switched towns building workers to other things - we have a incredible number of workers now.

A little I am afraid. I have played 3 turns so far, but each turn has taken 2 hours because our empire is so big.
 
Partial turn report. This game is in the bag, I will try to win it in my set of turns. If not it will only be a couple more.

Preturn 1325AD: Sell off some improvements in the new lands, but keep markets for happiness in starving cities, and some of the other free improvements that are paying for themselves in gold income.

I stop our Iron deal with the Inca - they were giving 35 gpt but we are much better off denying it to them. Wow - the Incans need Horses, Iron, Saltpeter and Coal!

Instead of rushing temples in corrupt cities (solely to cover some patches in our empire), I instead draft rifles from corrupt cities and disband them. In total I think I got about 30 conscripts and 10 or 11 temples rushed.


AI: Lagos flips.

1330AD: Take back Lagos.

Evora falls to just 1 army and a supporting cav.

Leiria also falls, and kills a cav. Portugal is now expelled from the SE peninsula. :cool:

Our Gems deal with Rome is ending this turn. I decide not to renew it since we get our own gems connected in a few turns.


1335AD: I concentrate on getting workers over to the new lands, and to making sure we have temples in all cities on our homeland that need them.

Grand River rushes another army.

I sell off lots of barracks on our home continent in fully corrupt cities. These will not produce any more units and are just costing us money.


AI: Our lux deal with the Inca runs out (we were giving Silks)


1340AD: A very boring turn, basically moving units across to the new lands and playing with cities.


1345AD: I decide it's turn for the Incas. We now have 8 Cav armies on the second continent (6 fully healed), and also 2 Rifle armies.

I do something scary and disband Emerita with the Sistine Chapel in, along with another as they are very large and would take many turns to starve.

The first city falls with no problems, but the second claims one of our Cav armies - it was at 16hp against a Rifle! :eek:

Losing the army is annoying, but I just rush another one, so no great loss. :lol:


AI: Rome and Portugal make peace.


1350AD: The first wave of Temples I built hit their expansion and we go from 53% to 56% land area. We have 68% pop.

Cuzco, the Incan capital is first. There are 9 Rifles there, which needs a hell of a lot of firepower to take down, but eventually it falls. We get 3 wonders - Sun Tzu's, the Mausoleum and Shakespeare's Theater.

Machu Picchu follows next, only 4 Rifles in it.

Tiwanaku is last, and it has JS Bachs there. groucho
 
Ya, I thought the game may have been ready for the final assault. Sounds like you are doing a good job of it.

I liked your draft and disband trick. I had heard it before, but had forgotten it. I will have to try to remember it for future games.

Aggie, one point on you ruleset. I wouldn't bother including the rule about dumping workers into a city to make it huge The recent versions of C3C and I am pretty sure PTW, you can't add pop to a city with negative growth, so that exploit was fixed. I am unsure about in Vanilla, but you could add the rule especially if you happen to play vanilla (and it is possible).

Yes, sounds like you are right. I don't think I will ever play vanilla again.
 
1350AD (cont...): Well, after some consideration I abandon Cuzco with Sun Tzu's since it was size 20 with 19 resistors.

I decide to start winding up Rome, so in a turn or two we can demand they leave or declare war. I demand a tech and they (predictably) refuse.

I do another round of drafts from our corrupt cities and help some Cavs get built quicker.


AI: Vilcas disposes us, but it isn't an issue (no troops there).


1355AD: Several new cities are founded from rushed settlers (draft/disband/rush 10 shields).

After Vilicas is taken back we are on 61%.

Huamanga is the first gain this turn, followed shortly by Oilantaytambo which I raze. The Portugese are no longer in this end of the continent.


1360AD: Heh. After 3 turns and 3 demands I tell Rome to leave or declare war and they declare on us. :D

They were furious 3 turns ago and are not that weak, so I guess it's not that suprising. Kind of cool though after all the other civs caved in.

Wow!! I take Neapolis with just 1 army - there were 2 Rifles and a 1hp Cav. I abandon and replace.

We have enough units and it's the only reachable city this turn so I take Rome.

Surreal. Hispalis has just 1 conscript rifle and it's a core Roman city! I guess their constant warring has taken it's toll.

Ravenna is better defended with 3 Rifles, and it depletes the Cav stock to single figures.

I decide to push on, even with few Cavs, since we are now on 65%. groucho

Cumae falls without too much effort, as does Veii.

I check the stats and we are 67% land and 78% pop. I dedice to screw the rest of the turn (workers and cities) and I hit enter...

W00t! My first SG where I get to play the finish. :cool:

Is that score good? I honestly finish so few SP games that I have no clue as to what people can (or try to) achieve.
