AG8 - Let's try Sid

Although the map was custom made it wasn't amazing by any means.

We had just 1 bonus food tile, and it was wheat (not cattle), and it wasn't visible from our starting position:

I get what you mean though about it not being random, even if we could get a map this "good" in every 2 or 3 iterations with the built in generator.

See MM1 (Defiant Sid) for a proper random map game with gameplay restrictions, although that was generated several times to get an island where we were totally isolated.

First don't get me wrong, I think it is a great game and convincing.

I agree the start position isn't particularly good tile wise. What I wonder is whether the map maker separated the AI from you more than average so you could have more land to settle? Just curious. As from my limited reading you expanded extremely well. :)

Is that score good? I honestly finish so few SP games that I have no clue as to what people can (or try to) achieve.

The score is pathetic. Normally, in GOTM, this is low score even for Monarch. But the game was not played for the score but for the win unlike the gotm, so it can make a big difference.

Can you post the biq so that everyone can download it and make sure that it is fair and Sid indeed.

Some people never believe...

Congratulations, it was a very well-played game.

[party] Fantastic, what a great job :D

I think it is fair to say that we were very lucky with that early long war between the Sumerians and India. It allowed us to take the first steps in the conquest of our island and also probably made this game somewhat easier than normal. After the war with India we were in a position to largely control the wars. This weakened the rst of the civs in the same way as it did India. I also learned that a stained rep is very annoying, but there are ways to deal with it.

Also, we could profit from a feature which the AI doesn't know to use and attack: the army.

@microbe: Thanks for the compliment. But a Sid win isn't as rare as you think it is. There are more examples on this forum, a.o. one of SirPleb in the HoF.

@akots: I will see what I can do about it, but Skyfish hasn't been on CFC for a while.

Great game everyone! It was a fun game.

Akots,
I think you are wrong there. This scores is only lower than the diety scores. For the last two emporer games it would have come in second only beaten by a milked game of someone going for the Cow award (moo). It blows away the scores of monarch and regent games which is not suprising given that the multiplier is so much lower. They tend to max at around 7000.

I think in general a high score is easier on deity than sid. You get an increase in score going to sid but not enough to offset a huge increase in difficulty. Also at least the GOTM's I played in, (this was a while ago), the positions on the harder difficulty was even less random than this game so that everyone would have fun with it.

So ya, it is a good score beaten only by the top players on deity who are specifically competing for a good scores in the GOTM (This score would have come in 9th in the last diety game). The higher multiplyer for Sid does play a part in this. The best possible scores would all be for Sid games.

I do agree it was easier than an average SID game, but that is exactly what we asked for. It wasn't super-easy either however.

As a total aside, here is an amusing sid start on the opposite end of the spectrum -3350 BC and 3 civs cities around me (As you can barely see the 4th direction is water).

The real killer though was that I was trying out AWS.

Good game everyone,

The score seems pretty OK to me. Especially as we're not that far into the IA :D

Well done everyone! Fantastic play. I'm sorry I missed my warmongery turn at the end, but you guys did a fantastic demolition job anyway. I'm amazed by the speed of the progress. I think I only missed one turn in the rotation, and at that stage we were still fighting Byzantium and we had approx 25% land! So in approx 1 1/2 player rotations we took out the most powerful civs and gained another 40% land. Wow! Congratulations

Although we did have an advantageous start (coast to two sides, one front, peaceful neighbour and plentiful land), I don't think anything can be taken away from the efforts of the whole team. Sid is still a massive challenge. I think the victory was simply a case of playing well at important times, eg, the fast expansion at the start, the first war, the infra build up and the war preparations. I think another crucial factor was the discussion between turns, because that led to making the correct decisions at the right time. I remember I was initially dubious about fighting India, but after team input we decided we should go on the offensive and began a military build-up. How different would the game have been if we had not gone down that route at that time?

So my thanks to everyone in the team, it was a great team to play in :).

Re: score. I could hardly give less of a toss about the score. I would be much happier if Civ 3 did not have a score. IMO, playing for score is about as enjoyable as hacking off one's head with a rolling pin ;). I have more respect for lower scores than higher scores, since a lower score tends to indicate a closer game and a tougher fight.

At some stage, I would very much like to play a random Sid game ;). Sid difficulty, everything else random...

I am starting up a new Sid game. Sid Space Race. It's not entirely random though (we have to go for space and we choose our own tribe and type of landmass).

Hey, that's random enough in my book! Please don't torture yourself too much!

Bah! If size isn't random then it ain't random! :joke:

I like high amounts of randomness and my single player games are often random. Rarely is the size random, and uncommon is the Barbs being random.

I agree with you, Nad, on score as it "rewards" only a single style of play (fast domination + massive miking). On the other hand "fast domination" is a fun variant so I like to go for score now and then (minus the milking part). In this game it happened to turn into a relatively fast domination game which combined with Sid level means a very high score (and thus the curiousity).
