So I was playing a game last night, and was going on a pillaging campaign against russia, they were the closest competition. I was the iroquois. I always like to do my pillaging with a army and then a clavary hiding behind the army, because the AI has never attacked an army of mine before unless I attacked them first. So I go through about 10 turns of slow pilaging and cut off their horses and iron and seperate about 5 cities from the rest of the group. On the last turn I cut off their coal. After that they attacked my army and calvary with 5 cossacks and 3 rifleman. MY army withstood the whole attack but died in the hands of a 1 hp rifleman, the very last one they threw at me. So I no longer have an army.. But I'm still way ahead and I'm def. going to win the game, I just never thought the AI would attack an army.

Oh yea, in my game japan had their own island but didnt know anyone but me until idustrial ages, so they were way behind. After they meet russians and english. They get like 11 techs, and then declare war on me and the english. They started bombarding me with like 20 frigates. lol But I have infantry and the best they have is samurai, so they'll be going down pretty soon and I'll have their island plus my 3 islands.

what kind of units were in the army? how many? in sirpleb's sid HOF game, he found that the computer will attack armies in certain situations i.e. if they are defending a city that the computer deems imperative to take. i don't know if that extends to resources, but coal is a pretty important one, almost as important as oil, and it sounds like you have not reached the ear of oil just yet. it seems possible to me that the computer deems coal as a critical resource, worth throwing units at an army

it also depends on the strength of the army - if it were an army of cavs, that's more vulnerable than an army of infantry. If you have attacked with it and it's hit poitns were down, that's vulnerable, too.

the funniest thing to me was, they waited until i completly destroyed alot of their infrastruture before they decided to attack. I was standing on a hill with some coal. lol

They sometimes attack by accident as well, if you are using NoAIParol=0 (or in vanilla/PTW NoAIPatrol=1).

They will also attack an Army if it's the only available target, which from the description of the situation would appear to be the case. I've certainly had something similar happen to me.

First thing is the Nopatrol can allow the AI to stumble into an army. If it does it attacks. I once had two units do that and then my army was damaged enough the AI was willing to attack it.

This is mainly a function of the defensive rating of the army and the attack rating of the units and the health of the army.

So if you have an army with 3 units of 3 defense (cavs) and no Pentagon or MA, the amry is not as strong as it would be with those two structures and a 4th unit.

If it is already damged, that makes it more vulnerable. They will always attack an army in the open that is redlined, if they can reach it. They will never attack it if it is full health and no units have an attack rating higher than the defense of the army.

So you can get away with a yellow army if all that is around is units of the same class that are in the army, most of the time.

It will not help to have an amry of archers at full health when cavs are in place.

it won't matter what you have if they have bombers, they bomb it down and attack.

It will not be safe to have any army in towns. They will not always attack them, but it is common. I have had Mech armies attacked in a town.

Yes - In my game Greece has an army loaded with knights. Is that rare?

Was that vanilla Civ3 or PtW, or was it Conquests? If it was Conquests, it's damned near unheard of! In vanilla/PtW, they do build armies.

Yep, in C3 they are good with armies. They also like to build the Pentagon and Heroic Epic.

Yes - It's vanilla. But why is it so rare that the A.I doesn't build armies in conquests? Have they programmed it so that the A.I can't build armies?

I hear they have armies in C3C, but I don't know how often they build them.
What is rare in C3C is AI using only fast moving units in the army. They put longbows and knights and anything in the same army.

I don't know about C3C but I know that in vanilla it isn't too rare for the A.I to build armies. And the army that I have seen had a knight and a few other units.

Different from the human player, the AI is able to rush Great Wonders with MGLs in C3C. I guess it prefers to do this to making an army, which could partly explain why those are so rare.

The A.I can use leaders to hurry Wonders? That's probably were the leader goes.
