AI Takes Forever

Hi,

I'm new here, so please bear with this if it's a silly question. I searched a bit, but could not find an answer, so I registered. Here's my issue:

My husband and I are playing Hotseat with a large map and, since about year 1800, the AI takes forever to finish its turn so we can start a new round. We have a 2.8ghz P4 and 512 of RAM. Is the long AI time due to our system specs or just because that's how long the game takes? And, to qualify, when I say the AI takes a long time, I mean between 2 and 5 minutes between turns.

STOP! this game will ruin you marrige, whoever looses will start a vicious hate of the other one. hehehehe, However if your not interested in my marrige advises I would lower the graphic settings and reduce the map size of your game. If that dont work, Increase your RAM.
Im having the same problem and im increasing my RAM from 512 to 2048.. think that will do the trick.

I don't know if this will change anything for you, but try to change this:


; Set to 1 for dynamic animation paging
DynamicAnimPaging = 1

to = 0

in the ini (in "My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4").

Some techniques people have used for modest increases (I'm assuming you're on WindowsXP) in performance include:

• Closing down all other applications including internet access, firewall, and antivirus while playing
• Update motherboard chipset drivers i.e. VIA, Nforce, Intel, etc.
• Install the most recent DirectX 9.0c Microsoft Downloads
• Update graphics and soundcard drivers
• General performance practices such as those outlined at Optimize XP
• Buy more RAM. I noticed a difference going from 1024MB to 1536MB. This recommendation costs money.
• Try setting Speakers in the game's [Audio Options] to "System Configuration" and not mono, EAX, etc.
• Adjust the civilizationiv.ini settings to reduce memory use

[edit: a dated but still often pertinent Services page is Black Viper's Web Site (cached). Be aware that, depending on your installation, some of his "Safe" recommendations may interfere. That said, I'm using most of his recommendations on a home networked computer.
