[BNW] AI Unit with Both range and close range wont take cities

So, i made Dragon units for my dragon civ, But the dragon units both have a long range fire breath attack, and a close range attack to take cities with.

The problem is they don't ever use the close range to take the city.
I surrounded my city with enemy units using the In game editor, and they only ever used ranged attacks on it, even at 0 HP.
(This wouldn't be such an issue if it wasn't for the fact that ALL the dragon civ units use these, Making the whole civ useless in combat.)

(another reason they have both close and long range, is because with close range only, they cannot attack on water while flying.)
 
Did the city they were attacking have water near it?
It might have had a river, But it did not have coast tiles.

Edit: Oh i should probably state, these Dragons are mostly used as Land units, they have the ability to fly over water yes, but this test was on land.
 
You've assigned the units RangedCombat values > 0.
Ranged units (RangedCombat values > 0) cannot normally capture cities, so the game does not understand what to do with this unit other than make ranged attacks like an archer, artillery unit, or a battleship.

You've also got your units assigned to "normal" unit classes like UNITCLASS_LONGSWORDSMAN but then for the same UNIT_FIRE_DRAGON_UNIT you are also stating it is the default unit within UNITCLASS_FIRE_DRAGON_UNIT. No unit can be both the default unit in one Unit-Class and at the same time be assigned to another Unit-Class: the game does not usually instant-CTD for this, but it usually leads to unintended behaviors.
 
i was afraid that would be the case, i guess i have to make some dragons not have range then to fix it. -.-

The unit classes i kept cause i was afraid to get rid of it, Since i'm kinda novice at this thing.
So i can just remove the <UnitClasses>STUFF HERE</UnitClasses> part then?
since it just sets up unit classes i don't use.
 
Yes, you should be able to get rid of the <UnitClasses> stuff since so far as I can tell you are assigning all your units to existing UnitClasses.

Just remember that no one civilization can use more than one unit from within the same unit-class, so you can't "double-up" on the same unit-class in table <Civilization_UnitClassOverrides>
