In my current Monarch game, I'm playing as the Chinese and have the Japanese, French, Iriquois, English, Egyptians, Russians, Romans, Greeks, Germans, Babylonians and Zulu as my opponents. The French were just killed off by the Zulu. I took out the Iriquois (sp?). The Romans and Germans are at war. I am acting as the world's police force, wiping out pigheaded/overaggressive/annoying civs and returning land to its rightful owner.
The English and Japanese are my longtime allies, both of them have MPPs with me so we're like the Coalition of Goodness or whatever. But here's the problem. Japan has been trooping units through my territory on and off for the last fifty years and it's starting to piss me off. They are gracious with me, so I tell them to piss off. They declare on me. Uh, WTH? We've been best friends from square one, but now he declares over a territorial dispute when he's gracious? Is this right?
I will have no problem keeping him at bay, seeing as I have rifles and he's still at pike/musket level, and my Cavs easily outstrip his Knight and Longbowmen. But why did he declare? Do the AIs get more foolish on higher difficulty levels? It seems especially stupid since I have somewhere upwards of four times his land mass, productivity, and military might.
