Air defence not working?

So, I've put four SAM infantry units on my only oil well and a couple more in the surrounding squares. Despite this, everytime I get the well built, enemy bombers blow it up the following turn. They don't seem to be doing anything to the bombers. Is this a bug or a weird feature? I can't build any airplanes of my own to defend myself, because of the lack of oil, so this is quite sad.

Should there be green messages saying my guys shot down some planes? I guess this could be because of the great amount of enemy planes, but I think I should have some success defending even though they always could get through.

You should have a 40% chance of interception with SAM infantry. If you're not getting any interceptions, you're catching an incredibly unlucky streak.

Maybe you can view the combat log (there are some logs in the upper left corner of the main screen). It should show you the combat results if you missed them.

If I'm correct, a sam infantry only has a 40% chance of interception and if the enemy bombers are stealth bombers then this percentage is actually halved. So maybe you just had some bad luck. You can place all of the sam infantry on the oil patch that you are so desperately trying to defend, I believe Sam Infantry only protects the squares they are standing on and the 8 surrounding tiles (read that somewhere).

Well, the combat log doesn't keep track of air engagements, but the normal game log does. (yes, I'm arguing semantics )

There didn't seem to be any messages concerning the SAM infantry. My guess is that they will only intercept air strikes, not bombing runs. After making peace with my enemy I managed to get some planes and while later making airstrikes of my own, the enemy did defend with his SAM infantry. Didn't notice if that happened when I was bombing though. Anyway, could it be that bombing can't be stopped without airplanes?

Just did a bit of testing, the SAM defend plenty well against the bombing runs, were intercepting at roughly a 45% clip before I got sick clicking. I'd chalk your experience up to a pretty rough run of luck.

Didn't read much of the thread, but be aware:
The AI often uses Spies to do this. I had it happen to me pleanty of times.
(You get a message that it was sabotaged if it was a spy).
